this is the distinction, if/when discover is enable for managed users yes absolutely need control. for normal users admins should not have control over this. that user should have his/her own control.
I just want to be clear here…
It isn’t just Discover, it is ALL links to outside sourced content. So, Watchlist, Search, Movies & Shows, Live TV, etc.
I’m not sure how Plex defines “Discover” when it comes to the Watchlist and the new Search.
Sorry I’m defining this as part of Discover content, watch more, search results, etc I’m considering as all part of the same whole.
That may not be how Plex is looking at this either, which is a good point to clarify.
No, this is the problem. Managed User CANNOT access shared Plex servers.
All my friends, with kids, are sharing my Plex server. They are NOT ABLE to use Managed Users accounts.
your friends should have control over this for their use case not what you decide is right for them
edit - this is the issue i have with this topic. this is not my (your) content. its being served by plex for their monetary gain. therefore i as server admin should not have the right to deny plex profit. each individual user should though.
In terms of outside sourced content, I agree.
However, I should retain control over my local Plex content and what is shared with my friends from it.
ok then i think your use case is different from the spirit of this thread
How so?
I’m speaking on my friends’ behalf. I’m sharing their needs in regards to outside sourced content controls…really just need an Account Level “Off Switch.”
You are/would be, just as they can have another friend’s server in their list, they should be able to enable/disable discover.
because this appeared to me via discover, and the content displayed is not served by me, nor was the content being viewed in the first place. now i will modify my statement a little bit. it appears this issue is with the “more with” feature in general and that would penetrate through to all user accounts if outside sources are used for all content. but from my testing if i select a source in my control the “more with” or “watch more” has only shown more content from my server. before this incident i was going to suggest we merge discover with server content for better integrated discovery. definitely not now.
Correct, and the Account Level, not just at the Managed User Level, because Managed Users cannot access shared Plex servers.
just to make sure i understand, you want your friend to have the ability to choose content level restrictions from your server correct?
I will restate, I think Managed Users complicates things way too much (for us admins and for Plex programmers) and really doesn’t add anything to Plex, IF we can control all content at the Account Level and add those accounts to Plex Home.
I think thats an entirely different request, and not really one I’d make. Managed users are entirely more appropriate for my use.
so you can totally add restrictions to an account for your media as is today.
edit - this is why i am trying to make a distinction. sounds like people are asking for control over plex services on all of their users. that is a users choice to make not mine as an admin.
Previous off-topic and inappropriate post removed.
I believe we are in agreement on this point.
Account Level control (Off Switch) of all outside sourced content by the Account Owner.
Plex Server Admins have full control over their own local shared Plex content.
I just got off a call with the team about this.
Let me get this into words I can share with everyone.
Please give me a few minutes, free of this cyclone, so I can put it all together.
ok cool. because yesterday it got off the rails with lots of requests on what plex needs to do for their business model. and when i start to question that i think its time for me to use a different server.
Would a potential solution be to have Discover and Search only return results from selected services, with another toggle to enable outside services?
This would give you the freedom of choice to turn off undesirable search results based on source by removing them from your subscription.
Also, Managed Users could default to the admin level choices, with options to turn Discover functions off entirely.
Spitballing here…
