Aereo Style Live TV/DVR

Hey dev,

I know this is a stretch but how about Aereo Style Live TV/DVR feature for Plex Pass users in Plex Cloud.

Yes I know about the legal issues they encountered but I am sure Aereo was way before its time but now it just might be doable with all the cord cutting sega going on.

One would argue that it is illegal except it would not be. You aren’t going to charge your customers to get access to the free broadcast channels. You are merely giving them a free digital antenna if they subscribe to your premiere service. According to my research, it is not illegal. You are not making any profit out of it. It is equivalent to giving your VIP customers a free physical antenna. You would not have to pay the retransmission fees.

However, in the back end configuration, to save on cost. The network tuners will have to be a one to many but not necessarily be a one to one as that would cost a fortune

With the latest HDHomerun Quadro, it seems like you can pull 4 streams from one antenna. That’s is mind blowing

Good luck with that. Do you think Amazon or any large datacenter is going to allow you to install hundred/thousands of antennas and the additional wiring?

If you are in the US but your server is in Ireland, how is that going to work?

It would be far, far easier if Plex allowed a software tuner that can read a M3U list of channels (IPTV) and then let you sign up for a free account at USTVnow, PlutoTV or similar to record from or stream live from. This way Plex isn’t responsible for the stream capture and avoid any legal issues that could come from it. Many of the major broadcasters also stream live as well so they could be added channels. But USTVNow would give you the basic 7 channels such as ABC, NBC, CBS, CW, FOX, PBS, WXTF. PlutoTV has Bloomberg, MSNBC as well as tons of “unique” channels (useful if you like college sports) as well as a few of their own channels that show movies and tv shows. EPGs are available for all of these.

So going a route such as this could be a better move.

Of course with Amazone, Hulu, Dish, YouTube getting into Live TV and IPTV services it’s possible Plex could negotiate with them as well so we could signup and use those services as well for a much larger channel selection which would all be legit.
