After loosing 4K, now i lost 1080p for 720p

hi there

I stopped using plex months ago (even a year) because overnight I couldn’t watch movies/series in native 4K like I could at first
ok, I gave up this fight after several discussions here and unfortunately I’m content with 1080 (from 8 to 12 Mbps)

my TV is a panasonic 50EX700, internet connection 1000MB DL, 600 UP
the tv is in WIFI

so I’ve been coming back for months and using plex to watch a series, 1080p 10Mbps
my settings are in maximum bitrate mode and original to file (with server not updated at this time)

the 1st episode is ok, bitrate and resolution ok, conforms to the settings
the next day I watch the next episode and there, PLEX MAGIC, I only have 720p 4Mbps as a choice on the episode
my settings are still in maximum mode
I say it again, take note, the 1st episode had the right speed, and the next day I only had 720p, without me touching anything on the settings on the server or TV side

I updated the server, rebooted my TV app and reset the settings to max
nothing helps always 720p maximum

so I don’t understand why my max throughput choices changed overnight (then I remembered I was on plex, the daemon app that changes settings completely randomly)

if anyone has an idea or explanation, I’m interested

I had forgotten how annoying this app was (no offense, just facts)

I’m ok to ditch 4k for 1080 (even if it hurts my a$$) but 720p on a 4K TV is just no
why does the speed keep dropping for no reason?

Thank you for your answers, and sorry for being so “dirty”.

Sincerely

Server Version#: 4.108.0
Player Version#: 5.66.1

hello ? anybody here ?

server logs with debug enabled is probably the next step.

Restart PMS
Wait 3 minutes
stream the content for 30 seconds
open Settings - Server - Troubleshooting (lower left corner)
Download Logs
It will give you a ZIP file
Attach that ZIP file here.

hi, i made what you said, here the logs

Plex Media Server Logs_2023-08-17_17-31-52.zip (2.9 MB)

someone that knows about the pansonic player app may need to review these as nothing is obvious to me what is causing it but i hardly know anything.

looking at your post from 2021, why not just get a cheap chromecast or roku or other streaming device and get 4k on your tv? using tv apps are not as reliable, get updated very slowly, and the experience is slow and not ideal.

Does your tv run “my Home Screen”?

This support article mentions certain Panasonic models that are no longer supported

https://support.plex.tv/articles/204080173-which-smart-tv-models-are-supported/

When you play a video look in the server dashboard to see what’s going on. Transcoding everything to 720p makes me suspicious that you’re on a relay connection

This is what you should see

If it says remote or indirect you have a misconfiguration in your network

the real issue, like i said in my 1st comment, is i watched the 1st episode in 1080p (i checked), the tomorow only 720 was available… nothing changed on my TV nor my PC while the night

things doesnt change with magic during the night, there are not small leprechauns who change stuff in my TV  :psyduck_confusion:

i know PLEX is a daemonic app but if an app doesnt change behavior if nothing changed in settings

or maybe its a random app ? maybe next weeks i will have only 480p ?? :smirk:

(sorry im salty, dont take it personnaly)

there are countless things that can change without user input. About every other post on these forums starts with, i changed nothing and it doesn’t work anymore. Then you find out either maybe they changed something they didn’t think was relevant or some other system did something on its own without user input.

So the fact that “nothing changed” doesn’t really help anyone try to figure out what is causing the real issue. i still would spend the $30 for a better android player and start watching content in 4k without streaming instead of watching it in 1080p with a tv app that seems like its not supported or has serious issues for panasonic.

actually the best solution for make work Plex on Panasonic is… not use Plex on Panasonic! After a lot of blasphemy language i have solved just using a Fire Stick that has a great Plex client.

My panasonic 65 oled 2021 does this, it did software update late 2022 and since then it plays ALL plex media at 720p 2mbps or less, despite direct play ticked. LG tv works perfectly no matter what media you throw at it. It’s a pain having multiple remote controls when using a roku or shield.

Seems like panasonics lack the required codecs. I only bought the panasonic oled because the 2018 panasonic had plex support dropped completely… won’t be buying a panasonic again.

The problem is not really panasonic. It’s the plex team refusing to allow us to use custom profiles and forces the lowest known profile on all panasonic TVs. If you look around in the forum you’ll find a post from plex devs saying “we don’t care because panasonic didn’t provide us a list of supported formats based on tv models, so instead of trying to detect what video can be played, we just used the common denominator”.
