Wondering if anybody else has had this issue? All files played back from VLC media player on PC as well as through Ubuntu Plex Media Server previously, but since latest server update a good chunk of my media collection now triggers a “there was a problem playing this item” error from Plex Media Server (Ubuntu).
Is this an issue with codec/transcoder updates missing, cache needing to be cleared, or running out of transcode disk space or something?
Log files please (Settings - Server - Help - Download Logs), attaching the ZIP file it gives you here will be the first and best way to figure out what’s happening.
If you can capture the logs about 30-60 seconds after the failure, even better.
thank you so much!
examples of failed movie file playback:
Barbarella
Batman LEGO Movie
Colossal
I’m seeing the transcoder issue a SEGV (segmentation violation).
I see video playing to the Roku just fine then I’ll see something else start and SEGV as the transcoder starts to build up the first couple blocks.
Concurrently, i am seeing evidence of your Cache directory being corrupt. Abrupt shutdown of the system perhaps?
Jun 03, 2017 04:07:34.276 [0x7f47463ed700] ERROR - Caught exception trying to stream file: /var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Cache/PhotoTranscoder/68/6829f885e39f554bad096bb0ab48f1872b5904f2.png:
To remedy this,
- Stop PMS
- Remove all the files and directories under
/var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Caches
- Restart PMS
Also, while PMS is stopped, clear out everything under your default temporary transcode directory (if you’re still using it) or the new location you have assigned.
The default is under /var/lib/plexmediaserver/tmp_transcoding.
Let’s do this first and see if it clears up before becoming more invasive.
Also, should it fail again, please go to Get Info -> View XML and paste the movie’s XML here (use Code paragraph formatting above).
