Nonsense…
I like your new hat.
Yeah I’m on discord for various stuff and someone now has the same (previous) avatar, so I had to keep looking twice if comments were mine or his lol.
That CAD!
Well, The Tricorne suits you. Well done.
Arrrrgh.
The beta released today a few hours ago (v7.24) includes Dolby Vision support, Single Layer Dolby Vision is fully supported, Dual Layer Dolby Vision will play as a single layer.
I believe the AI comes into things at runtime and attempts to find the best places to enhance for each frame, which is why it’s different to what TVs do. It’s not the perfect solution and depending on your TV, the TV will have better scaling (some TVs have terrible upscalers though). AI is probably a bit of a stretch too.
Yeap the new player will switch to the source resolution and match the framerate, it’s in the beta now (v7.24).
It’s a machine-learned scaling algoritm. The neural network is trained on thousands of hours of content on a GPU cluster. That then genrates the algorithm that’s running on the Shield itself. This is how machine learning works. The power/time hungry training is done up front, then the low power/real time algortihm that’s generated from the training is what’s utilized by the end users’ device. It’s “AI” because the only information provided to the neural net at the onset is “here’s a colleciton of low resolution frames (set A) and the corresponding high resolution frames (set B)” and the network figures out on it’s own, in a repeateable manner, how to transform the frames in set A into a close approximation of the frames in set B. This is doing quite a bit more than what a television upsclarer is doing.
Haven’t gotten home yet to check the beta. Is resolution switching a selectable option?
I wonder if my pi-hole blocks the AI
Just tested the new app. Good move from plex as the original player was quite annoying. Shame it cant read dual layer still so still cant get dolby vision .
Why cant we force it to read the second layer? Guess it just never gonna happen. Need to find a way to do single layer DV
Dual Layer Dolby Vision will play it will just miss the enhancements from the 2nd layer. If it doesn’t play could you prepare a sample and grab the logs from trying to play a Dual Layer Dolby Vision video?
Dual Layer works with 2 video streams in the container, at the moment Android / MediaCodec / ExoPlayer v2 / Plex only knows how to play with 1 video stream. The decoder by Dolby would need to accept both video streams and produce a single output. As such until Dolby add support there doesn’t appear to be anything we can do except to play only a single layer from dual layer Dolby Vision videos.
They are separate options in the settings for Plex, you can enable refresh rate switching or / and resolution switching.
NVIDIAs AI enhancement works with either options or with both disabled or enabled.
FYI I made a separate thread, but turning on refresh rate switching seems to force resolution switching for me, regardless of whether resolution switching is turned on or off in settings.
Anyway i can get approved for the beta, a number of items i would like to test.
HI
Sounds like a bug, although I would want resolution and frame-rate to change to always match the source as this is the ‘purest’ route to getting that video onto a TV panel, with the vast majority of 4K TVs having much better dedicated silicon for resizing to their native panel resolution (marketing call it upscaling) and any post picture processing such as sharpness, edge-enhancement and contrast changes are applied just once, and this can be applied better using the original source and not a source that has already been messed about with.
Rather than manipulate a copy, the TV display has the original footage to work with, this will always give the best result, although make sure your TV has overscan turned off as this reduces detail quite a bit by zooming into the image slightly, this means we are not getting a 1 to 1 pixel mapping on 4K footage, and not getting an exact 1 pixel to 4 pixels on 1080P to 4K, so the TV has to fuzz up the edges and estimate more pixels so detail is lost.
Couldn’t find your thread, but this will be fixed in a beta update today.
I see the option for the new player. It’d be nice to have a separate option for auto-res switching though as I like the new player but actually think the 2019’s AI Upscaler looks a little better in certain situations.
They are separate options, however the current beta has a bug which changes the resolution as well as the refresh rate despite the resolution switching being disabled. A new beta will be released shortly that fixes this issue.
Ah, ok, that explains it.
can you possibly upload screenshot of AI Upscaled video played?
i have 2015 Nvidia shield tv and thinking to buy 2019 pro if AI upscaling result is as impressive as advertised.
Hi
Difficult to show in a screen shot. Basically it is just using sharpening and edge enhancement, little different from turning the same functions on your TV to maximum.
We’ve turned the AI off as it is too over processed and everything looks miles better without it, with the TV set to add a bit of sharpening which is applied evenly to all footage then.
