AI upscaling not supported on 2019 Nvidia Shield -Edit: Nevermind it works!

Use Google or read this Thread again  Or, just look at Clone BD or DVDFab. Do not wonder. HD sound is not possible in an MP4. DD+ is maximum. Subtitles are also an issue. but everything is possible  ps. Plex Pass incoming

well that’s disappointing. Upscaling process actually has different algorithm beyond sharpening edges. for example take a look at software madVR, it doesn’t use AI but use some different algorithms to produce much better result than vanilla vlc, kodi, Plex or MPC-BE. and it even sometimes better than tv hardware based upscaling engine. but this type of enhancement typically require strong CPU and or gpu. i was hoping Nvidia ported the algorithm to Nvidia shield tv and utilize all gpu cpu power it has. but it seems that they just use AI as marketing gimmick to sell new Nvidia shield TV.

using madVR+htpc results in much better screenshots and video playback on my 55inch tv.

Picture settings are always very subjective and probably also depend on the TV used.

The upscaling happens outside of the usual Android rendering bits, so it’s not possible to see the effect on a screenshot.

It depends on what you see as impressive, it’s not going to make your SD content look amazing on a 4K TV, it’s still SD content and it will still be noticeable. It however does a pretty good job at making a better upscale (depending on how bad your displays upscale is), just remember it is upscaling and it’s not possible to fill in all those missing pixels perfectly.

The new Pro is quite a bit faster, which makes the experience very snappy, the new remote is awesome and it has Dolby Vision support, so it’s an awesome upgrade!

I hate this post because it’s making me want to upgrade

but the screenshot in android system is WYSIWYG as shown on your TV screen right? so screenshot would clearly shows the improvement.
just like pirates who do webrip by taking screenshots as shown on TV.

the thing is as far as Plex, what matter is how many transcode can the new CPU do. My 2015 Shield can do max 2 transcode in parallel, I dont know if 25% bump would do much…

do you mean the old Nvidia shield 2017 model will support Dolby vision?

ETA PRime in youtube have done that , you can check his channel on 2019 nvidia shield

Hey, I noticed you saying the new version of plex supports dolby vision, I’ve been trying to get this to work however the files are displaying incorrect colours and it’s not recognising Dolby Vision. I’m using the new Nvidia shield pro with an OLED LG… the plex app on the tv directly does work… do you know of any reason why this wouldn’t be working on the shield?

I’ve tried with the latest version (7.25.3.14365), but the dual layer Dolby Vision files played back as HDR10. Please check this samples: [link]

Dual-layer DV is currently not supported (neither by the Shield nor by Plex). Only single-layer DV will work

So why sixones wrote that works with 7.24 beta?

@djnice
because there is a slight difference between the Dolby Vision profiles (profile 5 or sometimes called ‘single-layer’ vs. profile 7 or sometimes called 'dual-layer). In other words: DV is not equal DV.

@sixones never stated that “dual-layer” would be supported… he said that that DV will be supported.:

Even if Plex would support “dual-layer” DV, you would never play such content on your Shield TV 19 since it only supports “single-layer”.

Furthermore, I requested support for dual-layer and one of the developers stated that Plex will never does it.

You will have to make your own single-layer DV content from e.g. your original UHD Blu-Ray (there is software for that; e.g., DVDfab… and there is a huge debate on that topic out there.)

@sixones never stated that “dual-layer” would be supported… he said that that DV will be supported

See this post: [link]
“Dual Layer Dolby Vision will play as a single layer.”

I known about DVDFab, but very expensive.

Interesting to read this because dual-layer DV doesn’t work. Maybe he meant that dual-layer DV will be played as HDR10 what would be logical (what is in fact ‘single-layer’ because HDR10 is a single layer).

That’s why I try to avoid terms like ‘single-layer’ or ‘dual-layer’ relating to DV as it is rather confusing. I would prefer to use ‘profile 5 DV’ vs ‘profile 7 DV’ what are the official terms used by Dolby.

The Shield TV currently does not support profile 7 DV. Unfortunately, that’s a fact.

Yes…

That just means that Plex ignores the second layer and just plays the base layer what is usually HDR10. And thus Plex just plays dual-layer content as single-layer but not dual-layer DV as single-layer DV

Maybe there is hope, the latest ExoPlayer (2.11.0) contains a patch for profile 7: [link]

Hopefully, yes!
That would be indeed interesting for the Plex devs.
We should try to get their attention toward this feature/patch. Maybe there will be a chance for profile 7 DV in Plex in the future
@sixones have you any information relating to profile 7 DV and Plex in the future?
