Album artwork & “matching”

I am running Plex on a WD MyCloud Home. All I am using it to do is to access and stream music files.

Everything working ok however occasionally Plex pulls incorrect artwork, despite the “use embedded artwork” being checked in settings.

A fix to this seems to be to “refresh metadata” on the album in question but I have 2 questions:

  1. Why doesn’t Plex just pull the embedded metadata as opposed to pulling any old crap from the internet, first time around?

  2. What exactly is “fix incorrect match”? How does this fit in, in the context of streaming one’s own files? Like…what’s it matching to? I don’t want a matching service (Apple music does that, badly) - I want to stream my own files.

Would appreciate anyone’s help!

Thanks

Plex changed the music agent with the 1.18 series. You will want to use the Edit option in your PMS settings on your Music library, and head into the Advanced section to make sure that you have it set the way you intended. It will help you to read the Plex website articles on the new music system.

The articles below were written for the older music system, but a lot still applies, especially the naming so that artwork is picked up.

When a song or video is scanned by it’s Plex Agent because you said Scan Library Files, it goes out to the internet to see if the song title matches a known song in the music database online. Sometimes because of naming or tags, it will match against the wrong song online. That’s when you’d use the Fix Match option. By allowing PMS to identify and match your songs, it adds artist info, album info, summaries, touring schedules, a whole lot.

While I realize you just want to stream your files, it’s nice to have them organized into albums with artwork and lyrics etc. That’s what matching is trying to provide.
