Album Artwork not being found or used from iTunes

Hi,

I posted this in the Linux section a few days ago but nobody responded - I’m still having problems so I thought I’d try here.

I’ve set up Plex on a Raspberry Pi 3 using Openmediavault and the plexmediaserver plugin - after a few clean installs and some head scratching (to do with OMV and file system formats), I’ve got it working and love it so far!
My plan is to create a ‘Hi res’ audio library containing CDs ripped to AIFF or Hi-Res downloads. I’ve got a dedicated drive and I’m using iTunes to rip and add music to the library - I’m pointing Plex at the folder containing the iTunes media files.

I’m not sure that I’ve got the configuration quite right as, despite having all of the details and artwork correct in iTunes, when I refresh the Plex library, everything shows as ‘Various Artist’ and ‘Unknown Album’ - even when I try to search for correct details, Plex doesn’t update the library with the details/artwork.
In my settings/server/agents I’ve got ‘Local Media Assets’ top of the list in all categories as I read in another post that this can force Plex to use tags and artwork that are already present in the library.

Have I got this set up right?

Since I posted this, I’ve added Discogs as a media agent but I’m still not getting any artwork/details through - it seems to work fine for artists but not for albums and I have to manually update each one. Even when I try ‘Match’ the search fails to bring in suggestions for any of the agents.

Any suggetstions are most welcome!

Thanks,
Darren

Myself I prefer not having Various Artist folder so I use Mp3tag and name it whatever it is like The life aquatic, no OST out anything then as the same name in plex naming and it adds it to the regular library and shows all the various artist in the list properly.

First of all, edit your Plex music library settings and make sure you enable ‘use embedded tags’.

You will find that by opening the Plex home page and then move your mouse over the music library name on the left of screen. Click on the … icon and select edit. Then click on the advanced tab on the left of the dialogue.

Then for each and every music file make sure you have the minimum required tags present:

Artist
Album Artist … (Leave blank for Various Artist albums only, all other tracks MUST contain this tag)
Album
Title
Year
Genre
Track Number
Cover Art

Thanks for the reply,

I’ve had ‘use embedded tags’ ticked all along, but still every single import has no details at all - everything comes in as ‘Unknown Artist’ - ‘Unknown Album’.

My Plex library is pointed at an iTunes library attached to OMV (specifically pointing at the ‘iTunes’ folder which contains all of the media and details).
Everything in my iTunes library is correctly tagged, all files are AIFF with embedded tags and artwork and iTunes is using its default file structure of 'iTunes/iTunes Media/Music/[Artist]/[Album]/[## Title.aif] (plex is pointing to the root of this path).

I’m pretty sure that somethings not right as, when I try to ‘match’, nothing is ever found. I’ve tried all of the agents and they don’t ever find anything, for example; I ripped the Peter Gabriel album ‘Up’ from CD to my iTunes library, all of the tags and artwork are correct, I then update the Plex library, a new album pops up called ‘Unknown Artist’ - ‘Unknown Album’, I click in the pencil icon and type in the details, the album then gets an artist picture as its cover. I go to ‘match’ and click ‘search options’, the details are correct and ‘last.fm’ is selected. I hit ‘search’, I get spinning wheel for about half a second and then i get ‘No matches found’ - but if I go to the Last.fm website, I can see that the album is there - this is the same for ‘Discogs’ and ‘Personal Media Artists’…I’m wondering if the search is actually hitting last.fm at all? …and wondering why Plex isn’t finding/using the tags that are already there?

…I think I’ve fixed it!
It looks like Plex doesn’t like AIFFs.

I have some albums in FLAC, iTunes doesn’t support FLAC so I added them manually to the iTunes media folder in the same format as the other files.
When I refreshed Plex, the album came up correctly and all the correct artist and album information and artwork appeared.

To confirm this, I imported another CD to iTunes, not in AIFF but in Apple Lossless (m4a) - (I’m not using MP3 as i’m creating a hires library) - again, after a refresh, the album appeared correctly with all the right tags and artwork.

Looks like I now need to go back, convert all of the AIFFs to Apple Lossless and delete the AIFFs, but at least it’ll work from now on.
