Album vs Compilation - what's the logic?

Hi there. I’ve been ripping my CD’s to FLAC for the last few days, and all of the Various Artist discs have been successfully categorised as either ‘Compilation’ or ‘Soundtrack’.

There’s just one VA disc that I’ve ripped that for some reason is categorising as ‘Album’, and I can’t for the life of me work out why. It was ripped with the same software using the same hardware as every other one. I’ve compared every bit of metadata between this and others that are correctly showing as ‘Compilation’, and they all appear exactly the same (ie same format for artist, album artist etc..). Similarly, it’s sitting in exactly the same folder structure as the others (under ‘Various Artists’).

Has anyone seen this and/or does anyone have advice how I can re-categorise this one disc to ‘Compilation’, like the rest of them?

Here is a s/shot to shows the issue:

Server Version#: 1.32.8.7639
Player Version#: 4.116.1 (Web)

Plex is using metadata from Musicbrainz to categorize the different release types. There’s an existing suggestion to allow for a local override where users can directly modify the MusicBrainz categorization inside Plex.

There’s also a guide on how to trigger a correction directly at the source:

Plex already considers the RELEASETYPE tag in the files‘ embedded metadata to override the categorization.

There are solutions, depending on how you use plex. If you use local metadata, you can use mp3tag and set the field “MusicBrainz Release Type” to ‚album;compilation‘. Then, let plex update the album metadata.
If you retrieve your metadata automatically, I believe you have to check whether the entry of the cd in musicbrainz has to be updated, if so, you should do it and wait for plex to pick it up.

Thanks @GeorgBB and @tom80H your quick responses - greatly appreciated (I did go looking for previous posts but couldn’t find anything - my bad).

The Release Group / Type field is definitely what I’m after, and I have changed the value locally and it works (which is great). However I prefer to use auto lookup for metadata, so am attempting to do this against the source record for the album in Musicbrainz.

I’m having trouble working out where / how to do this musicbrainz.org. Is it a difficult process? I can see it referenced on their website, but there’s no obvious reference to it when I come to edit the album online.

Any additional help to do that would be brilliant (I’ll keep persisting myself as well though).

I assume once I work out how to do it there’s a slight delay while the proposed change is verified (ie it’s not instant?)

OK, so this is getting weird now. I worked out how to edit the Release Group / Type on musicbrainz.org, but it appears to already be set to album / compilation:

OK, so have unmatched in Plex, and now it is correctly showing as a Compilation.

Thanks once again for the quick and excellent feedback / suggestions. Awesome.
