Since upgrading to Plexpass, albums, compilations etc. have been arranged under these headlines. In most cases this works just fine. However, in some instances compilations are added into albums and vise versa. I can’t seem to find a way how to correct this manuell. Does anybody know how to correct a compilation that shows under the album header, to show under “compilations”?
There’s currently no way to manually change this.
However there’s a feature suggestion discussing for Plex to allow editing the release type information (overriding the default assignment from derived from musicbrainz)
Didn’t have to correct compilations yet. But for live albums and singles it worked to add an MP3 tag “RELEASETYPE” with value “album;live” and “single” respectively. So I would suggest you try to add this tag with value “album;compilation” and see what happens. Be careful to use this exact spelling with semicolon as separator and no blanks.
Worked like a charme! Excellent. Thank you very much.
I use dBPowerAmp here to manually edit things — discovered it’s often useful for straightening out audiobooks to avoid the dreaded merge.
With dBPowerAmp you can add a compilation field, with an answer of Yes or No, plus set Album Artist to Various Artists as needed.
Plenty of tools around.
I don’t have too much of a struggle with MusicBrainz…just some irritation when it separates compilations/anthologies/box sets into multiple different albums and I have to reassemble Humpty Dumpty.
This is wonderful, thank you for posting! Could you please explain here or message me on how to do that? Tried messing with the tags and just can’t seem to figure it out. My tracks are flac don’t know if that matters for MP3 tag?
Sorry I don’t use flac, so I have no idea how to handle that.
For tagging mp3 files I use the free tool “mp3tag”. There I select all tracks of the album, open the context menu with rightclick and select “extended tags”. In the now opened dialog I add a tag “RELEASETYPE” with the value “album;live” or “single”. Ok, Save, Done.
The software mp3tag will happily create Vorbis comments for flac files.
I am using TagScanner.
Drag the Flac Files into the main window.
Go in “edit” mode and right click marked in below screenshot.
In new “field” add RELEASETYPE and press ok.
In value add “album;live” or “album;compilation"
Safe, Refresh meta data in plex or rescan.
That worked for me.
That is SO great. Now I can sort my Helloween extended edition albums separated from the original releases.
Big Thanks!!!
Additional Question:
Compilations, Singles, EPs, Soundtracks, they all work fine.
But:
Audiobook(s) seems not to work at all.
And even worse, Audio Drama(s) contains a blank, which seems to lead the scanner to read only “audio” and won’t work, too.
How to deal with this? I have a huge collection of audiobooks and audio dramas.
Only the types listed in this post are recognized. Plex Media Server 1.27.2.5929 - support for release type embedded tags - #33 by certuna
So far, Plex has no official support for radio plays or audio books, so it doesn’t do much good to recognize these.
On top of that, it is generally recommended to create a wholly separate library for these relase types.
And something tells me that you actually don’t want to see these albums then all listed in a single, sidewards scrolling list like anything apart from regular albums is currently appearing in Plex clients. So I recommend you to not put this relase type in there.
As this post was the result of the brave work of a customer who boldly goes where no documentation has been done before by any developer, I was hoping it was a collection of tags he did find out to work, not the whole collection of tags that Plex supports, especially as the releasetypes on musicbrainz were mentioned as a reference.
But ok, I will add this to my waiting list.
- Item 1: Get back a good source for TV show Metadata without the need to tag every episode myself
- Item 2: Get back a correct naming for TV show names without a correct filepath being renamed to rubbish from some internet database
- Item 3: Get a display for TV show extras on episode and season level for windows and at least web, not only for phones
- Item 4: Get a possibility to set local data for TV show description, Season Titles, Season description and artist bio without any internet database in a foreign language
- Item 5 (new): Get handling of release types for audiobooks and audio dramas.
I’m having an issue where Frank Zappa - Joe’s Garage is being classified as a compilation. Apparently some versions of this recording is incorrectly labeled as a compilation on MusicBrainz. This makes no sense and illustrates one of the reasons I’ve spent years setting my own metadata and enabled “Prefer Local Metadata”.
How can you configure Plex to never use MusicBrainz and only use local metadata?
What tag do I have to add to my music to tell Plex an album is not a compilation (when no such tag exists)?
I’m sorry, I’m not understanding. It seems like people are discussing how to tag albums as compilations whereas I want to prevent Plex from thinking an album is a compilation. There are no existing compilation tags in my albums metadata.
Probably not the answer you’re looking for, but if you use the “RELEASETYPE” tag mentioned, and enter “album” I think your local metadata will be used.
As well, if you don’t want any album type groupings, it can be disabled
Settings → Library → Group albums by type
I have tried RELEASETYPE > Album (and ALBUM, and album, and LP). It’s not moving the album out of Compilations.
I want to keep albums grouped by type. I don’t want Plex to put albums not tagged with compilation in the compilations.
I was successful with album;album
– i.e. defining both the main and the sub type:
This ensures that the album subtype of compilation
which comes from Musicbrainz is overridden.
Confirming what Otto said. Same here. Also adding this note which I noticed. If there is a space between the main and sub type it won’t overwrite the musicbrainz compilation.
