Currently, Plex only puts all Artist releases in an “ALBUMS” section. It would be nice if Plex would utilize MusicBrainz categories and separate by release type. Currently, there is no way for example with the below artist to just look at the Studio Albums. You have to sift through all the other release types and create a playlist for example if you just wanted to listen to just the Studio Discography.
I think this would be a great addition but I realise it would mean a lot of changes throughout the whole Plex stack: a new “release type” field in the database, new code in the scanner to populate it (musicbrainz -> db), changes to the Plex API so this field can be queried/returned to the clients, and changes to the codebase of all the the client apps to display (and filter) releases by release type.
Let’s hope it’s at least on their internal roadmap!
Also, do you think by doing this tracks wouldn’t end up getting the same rating (this has been posted about before).
If you’re not sure what I mean, it’s when I’ve got a single and that same track is on an album, when I go to rate the album track it also applies the same rating to the single, or visa versa. It could be not related to separating releases as originally mentioned, but thought I’d say regardless.
It would be good to follow the sequencing on something like Spotify which offers Albums, Singles and Best Of Compilations. I’d also love to add a Live option as so many bands are now offering live content. Just a tick box for “Type of Album” would be a fantastic add on.
If they added this feature of separating album types (singles, EP, album, compilation, live) Plex would have nothing to envy to most music mainstream providers. It could definitely be a game changer, why isn’t this implemented yet? Some of the most basic features requested are waiting in the line for years in this forum, literally. Like the post asking to simply add artwork to Playlists, laying there since 2016
