@nrobson04 Hi there. We have acknowledged the issue in several threads and have been working on a solution. Sorry for the lack of updates, but for a long while there was nothing to report back with. I can tell you now that we’ve been working with Microsoft on the issue, and we have identified a platform issue that is contributing to the issue. An Insider build with this fix will be arriving in the next week or two. But a caveat. While this build may fix the issue for some of you, we think it may still be present for others after. The issue is complicated and likely has several contributing factors, and the platform bug we identified has made it impossible to investigate properly. So lets get that bug out of the way and see where we are after.

Perhaps I was too soft in my response.
The reason why the optimized version doesnt include HDR any longer is because Plex knows its a problem so they intentionally remove it when its optimized.
What better way to optimize something than to remove the components you know are a problem?
That isn’t quite right. The reason optimized versions of media aren’t HDR is because optimized media is always encoded to H.264 video, and HEVC/H.265 is a requirement for HDR.

thanks we appreciate the response. Since we are living in an age of 4K HDR now, we all want to use Plex to its fullest ability and stream the latest formats on the latest devices. We hope you resolve this soon so we can do that

Hi Moussa - how are we going here on a fix for Plex and 4k content? any ETA?

We are still waiting for a fix to the platform issue.
I’m running Plex Server 1.13.2.5154 on an Ubuntu Linux 16.04 LTS x64 platform, 4K library is rendered H.265-HEVC/AAC 5.1 3840x2160 (or whatever the movie requires to maintain the correct aspect ratio (like 3840x1608)), Network is Gigabit wired Ethernet, and my playback devices are Roku Ultra 2016 and 2017 models which use 100Mb/full duplex mode Ethernet.
Direct Play is enabled, and CPU loading is very small, hovering around 5% of one CPU.
Sounds like the problem is the X-Box. A $70 Roku box plays Plex 4K-h.265-HEVC/AAC 5.1 just fine, no buffering issues and low CPU loading, very fluid playback. Took me too long to figure this out, but it does work. I use Handbrake for encoding and MKVToolNix/GUI for managing streams.
One more test, True Dolby 7.1 also plays seamlessly with a 4K video stream on the setup described above.
I’ve had a play around and don’t like our chances. Plex’s behaviour is still the same (as expected I suppose since the transcoding after a few seconds bug hasn’t been nailed down yet) but I’m also still getting severe stuttering in the Xbox film and TV app which makes me think the platform bug is still present.

I think I was able to narrow it down for Moussa to investigate more. Unfortunately, besides noting that he is looking into that exact problem there isn’t any new news on the issue yet.
Yes it is a shame its still going on. Plex is rendered useless to me at the moment, since i have all this 4k content to watch. hopefully they have a more clear understanding on whats happening now after you sent Moussa that info
so i guess we are all just made to wait for a fix thats never coming to XBOX plex app?? i just installed a new version on the Plex server on my desktop… hasnt resolved anything.
Rather than posting the issue over and over here, it would probably be better to post it on the Xbox forums to get the issue resolved quicker. https://forums.xbox.com/en-US/home
I am not here to make Plex’s life easier. its their platform they need to speak to appropriate vendors to fix the issue. And it has been posted on Xbox forums over and over.
we are going on almost 6 months without a resolution.
