I have tried restarting everything and nothing seems to work
Either your drive with all your media is broken, switched off, unplugged
(I canât help you if thatâs the case)
or
it has gotten a different drive letter after being removed and connected again.
Inspect the Plex media info any item to find out at which drive letter Plex expects the files to be.
Then compare it with the current drive letter.
If the two are not the same, change the drive letter of your media drive back to its previous letter.
A third possibility would be if you moved your media files or renamed or moved the folder where they are sitting in.
The drive works fine, I did unplug the drive and plug it back in. Those instructions all seem to be for windows. Any way to change the drive on an apple?
I think the case is that it got unplugged, but I dont know how it can find the drive. I can watch the movies on my computer not using Plex

Well, you posted your question in the Windows subforum.
Have you renamed your drive or a folder on it?
Did you check the media info of an item (as requested above) and compared the filepath?
Sorry, didnt realize I posted in the Windows forum. I did look at the media info, but unfortunately dont really understand how to read the filepath info. I havent renamed any files on the hard drive.
I appreciate your assistance.
This is what the path says:

Apparently, Plex expects your file to be located here:
/Volumes/Untitled/Movies/Still.Alice.2014.DVDSCR.XviD.AC3-EVO.avi
So, do you have a volume (a hard drive) named âUntitledâ with a folder âMoviesâ on it?
No, it is named Tanda. Should I name it âUntitledâ?
Crazy. That worked. Thank you so much! What if I want to rename the Hard Drive. Is there a way to fix that in Plex?

Unfortunately not.
All you can do is Edit your library(s), go to the âAdd foldersâ tab and change the location where Plex is looking for media. But chances are high, that it doesnât identify all of your media as before.
Or, if you are a very experienced computer enthusiast, you can use this procedure to change the volume name within Plexâs database: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/comment/1080551/#Comment_1080551
I know this is an old topic, but the subject seems relevant.
Last night it all worked, today all my content says âunavailableâ. I did nothing between the times. If I click the unavailable, it shows the location, which is the location that the file resides, and I can play said file with another program. Any reason that it wouldnât be available anymore?
âScan Library Filesâ, so Plex will go through every file and remove the âunvailableâ tag.
And make sure that your media storage is not sleeping/unavailable during the scheduled server maintenance hours: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201553286-scheduled-tasks/
I did both those, but no joy. In the end I was able to âfixâ the problem by removing the libraries from the server and re-add them. Then it scanned and found all the files. It was weird, as there was nothing essentially different, and nothing that had obviously occurred between the time it worked and the time it didnât. Thanks for the input, appreciated.
Where are your media files stored?
Are they perhaps on an external hard drive?
If you are on Windows, external hard drives can sometimes get a different drive letter assigned to them. (usually after you unplug it and swap other USB drives around).
But a different drive letter means a different location for Plex. So, all files are suddenly âunavailableâ.
You need to make sure that your drive is always using the same drive letter. You better assign it a letter manually.
nope, linux (mint) and both internals drives got lost. It was strange. I checked the locations that plex thought the files were, the files were at those locations, drive location names didnât change. To fix, I really just removed the libraries from plex then added them back. Took some time to rescan (could watch the little garbage cans disappear as the files were found).
really nothing should have happened between working and non-working. I donât have auto updates, nothing should have changed. Unless something odd happened in an auto scan for new files?
This doesnât sound right. If you really âremovedâ the libraries, you wouldnât have seen those trash cans anymore because they wouldnât have existed anymore.
Did you really delete the library or did you merely edit it and remove and recreate the path information?
well, I went to the âedit TV showsâ and where it says âadd folders to your libraryâ I added a new entry, clicked the âXâ on the old and that went away . So maybe this is remove and recreate instead of deleting the path? I didnât actually delete the library or specifically the contents of the library.
Same thing just happened to me ⊠all of the video files were there, but all said âunavailableâ.
I fixed it by changing the permissions on the folders. On a Synology NAS, I gave the âplexâ user permissions to the relevant folders. So either I, or someone or something, had prevented the âplexâ user from Reading those folders. Changed permissions, and âunavailableâ has disappeared.
Slightly different issue. And this one was kinda âannouncedâ:
