I have been using Plex for years and never have had a problem with remote access to the server. Now all of a sudden my server says “not available outside your network” and I cannot access it. Nothing has changed as far as software or equipment. Was wondering if anyone knows if anything has happened before I go into a deep dive of troubleshooting. It’s a little difficult for me as I’m on the road this week so wouldn’t be able to do much until next week.
The server shows up in my authorized devices. However, when I go to the XML there is nothing that even says “connection protocol” in the script. I pulled the XML by going to one of my movies, clicking on get info and then get xml.
That’s not the correct XML. You pulled the movie’s media info as XML. You need to follow the steps in the article I linked. Those should lead you to the right XML document.
Oh thanks I read the instructions wrong. So I did that and everything was correct. I went through all the troubleshooting steps which none worked, so I did a complete uninstall with the registry key deletion and all. Re-installed and now my server says remote access is available, but my apps say it’s offline. This is why I love/hate Plex. When it works it’s great, but when there’s a problem it’s a royal pain in the ass! Thanks for your help. I’ll keep plugging along to see what I can figure out.
Thanks for all your help. So for some reason where I’m working when I try to get onto plex through their internet wired or wireless it tells me my Plex server is unavailable. When I do it from other places it is fine. So obviously has something to do with their network. It’s not that big a deal so probably not worth the hassle to see if there’s a solution.
You might be running into DNS rebinding protection. Basically, it stop’s your device from resolving your server’s .plex.direct address, which is used for remote/secure communication with your server. This “protection” feature is commonly enabled on higher end/enterprise routing equipment.
