Alternate [external] Audio Tracks

Yes please!

I highly want to add Spanish audiotracks to movies and shows for my family as they don’t speak English. I would love to just have external audiotracks without re-muxing my entire 34TB library.

Please make this happen.
This feature already exists on Jellyfin for more than a year now.

Would also like this feature. But I guess that it’s not gonna happen :frowning:

This is literally the only reason why I can’t use Plex for all of my media. Adding audio for other languages as an external .mka container instead of remuxing every file is so much easier. I honestly can’t believe that this isn’t implemented when external subtitles do work. Normal mpv works without any issue and even Jellyfin implemented it some time ago. Shouldn’t a paid product have more features than its free alternative? Anyway, even Plex Pass exclusive would be fine, just please finally add this one.

Interesting idea! This is another one that has been around for a while and we are working to find these threads and at least let you all know that they are seen, we just haven’t done a great job in letting you all know that we are in here checking them out. TBH off the top of my head I have no idea as to the technical complexity of doing this type of playback from within server. I am sure that if we tried opening this up we could get nearly as many different use cases and file combinations as people using the feature. That being said, it definitely isn’t impossible, and while potentially complex to try and cover as many cases as possible, is something we should at least evaluate and give a response on. This response probably won’t be quick, but I am adding it to a list to consider and review for the team. Thanks for all of the ideas here. :plexheart:

Thank you @McWanke.

I have myself had to jump over to Jellyfin for their external audio support, there the external mka can be a dubbed version and I don’t have to remux the original file myself. This works flawlessly in Jellyfin, and I’m sure you won’t have much trouble implementing it yourself.

Perhaps you could copy the restrictions set up by jellyfin, to limit the scope of this feature request.

@McWanke Thank you for the update!

As @firstdib mentioned, this feature already exists on Jellyfin and works pretty good, so it’s definitely possible!
Really hoping this feature will be added soon, as it will save me a ton of time remuxing existing media to add dubbed audio tracks, if I can just add an external file next to them that Plex will automatically discover (like external subtitles).

This feature would be really great to have. My parents don’t understand english very well and I always have to embed french canadian audio into my files for them which can be a long process. That would certainly help adding content for them.

+1. please add this feature, it is really needed

Hey, are there any updates regarding this?
Is it known if this is going to be implemented anytime soon, or at all?

+1 this would be great.
Sometimes I also do not want to touch the original file - I just want to have an alternate audio track. Would be great if this would be possible.

@McWanke could you please give an update regarding this? If this feature is planned at all?

It has been nearly a year since your last comment, and at this point, it’s a feature that has been available on Jellyfin for nearly 3 years.

This is not currently on a roadmap. It is a neat sounding feature and would certainly be a nice addition, but I don’t see this being high enough in priority to be tackled in the near future.
