Alternative to Plex

OK, we have tried to give the new app/UI a chance and just can’t do it. Nobody in the family likes it. No, I don’t/won’t use Plex to do online content, it was used for thousands of local movies and countless mp3s. With the new UI, what took a few seconds to do now takes several menus to do. That is why I went with this product many years ago, clean folder navigation on the left and easy movie info screens. Goodbye lifetime pass. I am a sucker to think customers matter to companies anymore. It is so sad they would just completely alienate people like this in a money grab for online content. You should have made a diffent app for that you jackwagons.

Anyway, what are the alternatives for local content?

Kodi, technical support, numerous ways to modify skins, plays most files with no problems.

Oh, nearly forgot, it’s free

Kodi isn’t an alternative to Plex per-se, since it doesn’t do the “1 server, multiple clients” architecture. If you only ever use one client, it’s probably good enough.

Otherwise, AFAIK, and as mentioned previously, Emby is the only one that can compete with Plex for similar use-cases. It’s got different pros and cons to Plex so you’d have to try it for a week or two in order to see if it’s better for you.

Looks like I will give Emby a shot. Thanks!

I will give it a try, thank you!

Not trying to be argumentative… but whats so different? I just logged into the webapp and everything looks the same to me just the online stuff is added on the left. Browsing my local library is done exactly the same.

Again, not trying to be argumentative I’m curious to know what has changed and where.

The web app is NOT what people are complaining about at all although it may be at a later time. What the big issue is is that a new and radically changed interface has hit the Roku app.

Ah. Thanks for the clarification.

Emby can be used as a backend for kodi as well. There is an emby kodi addon that integrates the emby library into the kodi library. So you can do the whole server client thing with emby as the server and kodi as the clients. Best of both worlds.

No need to move to Emby for many users as MrMC is the superior alternative Plex client for Amazon Fire TV & Apple TV & iOS. It’s based on Kodi with the naughty plugins removed. Unfortunately for that reason there is no possibility of a Roku version.

Just wanted to clarify that the old version of the Roku app is available.

The old version of the Roku app is however only available temporarily.

As an aside why was there no similar temporary reintroduction of the old app for the Amazon Fire TV when a perfectly serviceable app was replaced with a vastly inferior version? We owners of the Amazon Fire TV complained just as bitterly at the time as the Roku owners have today. The introduction of the horrible Android TV UI to the Amazon Fire TV was what forced me to find MrMC so I could carry on using Plex. Maybe the Roku Plex client is far & away the most popular Plex client so you feel no need to take account of feedback from owners of other client hardware?

I switched to Emby. The old plex app/channel has been made available for a limited time. I still really did not like it, as continuous play stopped after playing 4 or 5 episodes. I started using plex years ago for my local media needs. After reading many posts and articles about plex, it seems plex is looking to get out of the business of local media needs. It seems plex is trying to morph into some sort of content provider. Which is not going to meet my needs any further.

Same page man, same page. I ONLY use/used Plex for local media and hence I got the lifetime so I could easily watch/share my local media while not at home. With their changing from a media server into a market that is flooded with online content providers, then it no longer suits my needs. They will fail at this BTW. There are bigger fish in that pond already and they will not be able to compete. Plex - R.I.P. 2019

I installed MrMC on my Fire TV and this just might do the trick. I have a folder navigation once again. Thank you for the help Nigel!

I never got the lifetime. The only reason I did not buy it was because I dont share my server, and I dont need to use it remotely. Although, I was considering it before they took the classic away. Now that they have done this I’m glad I did not pay. I would however pay a one time fee to get the classic back though.

From my side, I really don’t care about the UI, as long as:

  1. It works (that’s important!). It seems obvious, but the current release for the Samsung Smart TVs crashes all the time for a lot of reasons.

  2. And let me change the subtitles’ color.

Thanks.
Regards.

I believe you would not need to purchase Plex Pass even if you wanted to share or remote access.
