I think that this will be true for me too. I will keep plexmediaserver running on my NFS server for family that I have shared to and those who are not disenfranchised by the UI changes. For me particularly, I will be looking for a long term solution and that could a completely different media server environment. The writing is on the wall that they are changing their direction and that direction does not include me.
@redboneps - this exactly. I want more options for a custom interface, not less.
Thank you for all of the interactions so far. I was not expecting the feedback, in a civil and informative manor. While it is true I would rather have the old UI folder list on my main screen navigation area and not change anything at all, that doesn’t seem to be a reality. To summarize so far, the web UI is still perfect (at least for now). I paid for the MrMC app on both my Fire TVs and I have a workable short term solution. Long term, I will probably keep the plexmediaserver service running and start testing Emby / Kodi / etc. in 2019.
If you can run Kodi (or spin off) then you can install the Plex for Kodi or Emby addon into Kodi.
This would allow you to skin Kodi, use all of it’s addons (if you want) as well as still access your server with a really good playback engine.
If using Emby and you have network shares setup you can configure each library with the direct network path to the library and this will allow Emby to hand off just the file name vs streaming the file. All meta-data and watched status and what not done normally on the server but since Kodi can access the file system directly it allows it to do so for pretty much flawless playback on the local network.
But even without that feature access Plex via Kodi can be very powerful if you don’t need some of the features that haven’t quite made it to the plugin yet.
Have always wondered why someone would use Plex or Emby inside Kodi.
Plex Retro will not be a permanent channel and we plan on removing it once the official
channel has been updated
Which misses the point entirely.
Your user community is PISSED and every PLEX and cord cutting forum has threads dedicated to “PLEX alternatives”. This was also the response to the new Android app, and evidently to the Fire TV and smart TV apps.
Since it has failed on EVERY platform, maybe it’s time to admit the new interface is not what your user community wants?
Rarely have I seen such absolute HATE & LOATHING for an application.
Where is the retro version for Android?
Ironically, I’ve seen you reference the book “The Design of Everyday Things”. A design that is more difficult to use, more complex, requiring more steps to accomplish simple tasks and removes features key to users is NOT good design.
Another positive is that the plugins are open source so you don’t have to worry about UI changes like the closed source versions. Well it’s Kodi so you can skin it anyway but just saying.
If only the plugin was more feature rich with TV/Grid and whatnot but as far as players go it can’t be beat.
THE DAMN PLUGINS ARE DISABLED IN PLEX RETRO !!!
Elan, do you not have a clue why people are so damned angry with you?
No, they’re not, and I’d appreciate you not yell at me, especially this early in the morning.
Maybe it’s time to read the actual post, where we talk about the new interface?
Well the Plugins aren’t working in Plex Retro, and they’re not working on the Web version anymore.
WHY?
And sorry to have ruffled your feathers at noon my time, but after thinking the retro version might actually work (at least for a while), I was a bit put off when I found out that Plugins – an important feature for myself and many of your users is now disabled across the board.
While you’re upset at my typing all caps many of us have to actually listen to family members who are already beyond fed up with the new Roku and Android versions. We will be spending our holiday vacations researching options to try and get back the functionality that WE PAY FOR with our PLEX passes.
Mate, relax.
They already gave you a version as a hotfix until the actual version is fixed. What more do you want?
It’s software developement, a tree isn’t built just because People know how it looks like.
Also Android, if they revert back all the functionality like gapeless and design for my music, I may be the one writing in caps. So you can’t really make everyone happy. (though I agree the Roku/PS4 and wahtnot design is an insult to my eyes)
Maybe it’s time to read the actual post, where we talk about the new interface?
The condescension is a nice touch. Thanks for that.
Which post might you be referring to? No link is included.
There are likely over a thousand posts in this forum of users who are frustrated and angry with the changes to PLEX. Perhaps multiple thousands; I haven’t bothered to count as there are more threads than I have time to follow.
So where in that mass of anger is the post to which you’re referring?
Early on I tried posting constructive criticism.
From what I can tell constructive criticism has been ignored.

Have you not had your morning coffee? You’re suggesting I read a post that I’ve obviously already read since I quoted from it?
That post in no way addresses why your user base is so angry. Nor does it address the flawed idea of offering the previous version, but with the very features that users were upset at losing disabled – a point you chose to ignore.
No sir, I have not.
Isn’t that exactly what we’re addressing here?
We will improve the navigation and many other UI elements, based on your feedback
And Plugins, which are a key feature for cord cutters?
I’m sorry, but per the blog and the post above, plug-ins are not coming back (at least not in their current form). To reemphasize, less than 2% of our active users actually use them, so I would hesitate to call them a key feature (while realizing that different features are important to different people, vive la différence).
Client users or Admins who purchase Plex Pass?
total. users.
