Alternative to Plex

Would it be fair to assume you’ll be keeping Retro on the Roku until the categories are gone on the updated app? I’ll even willingly beta test the update as soon as it’s rolled out without the categories.

Yes, very fair. As Chuck Norris said: “Anything less would be uncivilized”

Can we have Android retro and Xbox retro then?

Sounds fair. You won’t be able to satisfy everyone anyway. Old GUI will also have People with pitchforks out. :innocent:

I hope consideration is made for those that prefer the new look

Personally for me, I would hate to go back to the old look

Plex is in a tough spot. Returning the interface to something similar to the “old” look is going to please some, but aggravate those that prefer the “new” look.

It sounds like the interface for all devices and apps are being re-evaluated, and that’s a big task. The new look started a couple of years ago with the Plex Media Player, and took 2 years to get to the Roku, with various devices added one at a time along the way. I don’t know too much about programming, but when you think about every button, icon, menu, screen and how each interacts with the other, there’s a lot of work. The server itself probably has a lot of code that may or may not be redundant or need to changed to deal with the new interfaces however Plex decides the new way forward is going to be implemented. On top of that, there’s always the “bugs” in apps and server that need to be addressed no matter what the interface looks like.

In any event, I hope they take their time and do it right.

Myself I don’t mind the new UI terribly except all the discovery. All the discovery I need is on the home. I don’t need it on every library. So maybe just an option to disable discovery? And it’s a bit odd that the controls are in the middle of the screen. Not highlighted or anything. Just dark grey buttons. I must be getting older because at first I totally missed them. I was looking on the perimeter of the UI.

I’d also like to thank you for finally bringing the enhanced player to iOS. That was massive in reducing much of my transcoding as my Samsung TVs handle the codecs well at home.

I’d also like to see two options. One to allow the wait time in playing the next episode. 15 is just a bit long. Secondly, I watch tele to fall asleep. An are you watching dialog to turn off plex would be great.

Finally, I’d just really like to see a continued commitment to enhancing our local media experience. I see some efforts. Please, continue in that endevour.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of things I’d like to see from plex (version selection, seasonal tv extras, etc), but it is to say I’m glad to see that plex sees they made a misstep and thus far seem somewhat willing to work with its users. I’d like to encourage that instead of berate someone attempting to listen.

Hopefully with some luck they may be able to shoe-horn the old server/library selection method into the new look. That would get rid of the navigation issue and confusion on hubs we have now. Would also be good to put the Playlists back in with the Libraries.

Couldn’t all this nonsense be fixed by having 2 different themes? Old & new?

I’m hoping it’s an intent to incorporate server selection and libraries , not a lucky, accidental programming error

Libraries, as far as I’ve read and to my understanding definitely. (At least Elon wrote that it’s their intention.)
Hope this helps.

I have tried a lot of Clients for Plex. To be absolutly straight with you, I have not found one that works perfectly without a bug. Plex supports already too much in my opinion. If they start support versions on Clients also, I’d be scared it gets even worse.

Yep. I honestly think the only way to solve this, is to listen to the main concerns and figure out what most People have a problem with. I read this forum a lot and it seems like it’s library mostly and for some Server selection (Also further smaller things like search on specific servers etc).
I don’t think the People liking the new UI have a problem with the functionality of the Libraries coming back as example. With a bit of thought they do make more sense (at least to me).
Server Selection seems to be important for anyone that has multiple Servers. I can’t really check on the problem. But honestly, a setting more to fix their Issues?
Who cares, it’s good if more People are happy.

If we look at what Plex has been doing past year:

-scrapped Cloud
-scrapped Plugin-Support
-Unifiying more and more clients with one specific UI

What does that tell us? They want to take of the pressure size of the project and not necessarily do less, but smarter.

Sometimes drastic changes are needed. I would have gone even further.

Make a 2 Level Priority list:
Level 1 (An Update all 1-2 Months, besides hotfix):
Client: Roku, Apple TV, Android TV, Smart Tv’s, Android, Apple…
Server: Qnap, Synology, Windows, ubuntu

Level 2 (One big update a year):
Client Older Devices, PS4, XBox one etc.
Server: Rest

They have the userdata to see which is needed more than others. That way the Level 2 can get stable releases. and don’t give as much work. After some Time, throw them out too. A PS4 handles certain things differently than an XBox one or an apple tv. This just takes time and ressources. Roku costs what, 100 bucks?

Here is what I didn’t like in development last year:

-Tide
-Podcast
-Newscast
-The mindset to give us a Browser replacement (This is really impossible)

But I do see that Plex somehow stayed afloat for many years with lifetime subscriptions of 120$ or so, which is nothing. I see that they need to lock for ways to generate money.

The refocus on fixing the Apps is reassuring for us and I also believe financialy the better way. To remind you also of the good.

-Subtitles (kinda had to with sub zero gone. I hope they continue to further the feature (offset alread came)
-Sync on my android device finally works
-Gapeless
-Better music player in total (way faster for me at least - on Android)

Are talking about the android (phone) version? If so I completely agree.
If you are talking about the Roku/PS4 version, what do you like about the colors and what about the navigations?

Was mainly thinking of the new design on the Roku (But i like the new version on Android also)

The colours dont bother me, but a bit darker would be nice

I like the way the navigation works, dont have to keep clicking entries, movie highlight to TV and it auto updates screen with first tv library, move to the right and it auto updates with details of other libraries that are highlighted, click one and the whole library is displayed

All personal preference, but for me i find the new layout much nicer experience

Furthermore PLEX should set those online things to lowest priority.

There was a vote in a German Plex Facebook Group and the result is more than clear.

91% prefer to ditch the online crap, 7% don’t care and only 2% like it. I think it’s obviously that the user neither want tidal, webshows, podcast nor news.

I have little trust that Plex really wants to “please” their customers. Nut I have zero trust in any “online” poll. There is just too many ways to skew the results from asking loaded questions to faking votes and there is no way to tell if anything questionable is happening or not happening.

In a lot of ways Plex is quite foolish but they are not near foolish enough to base anything on polls of any sort that have no real control at all.

I would like changes too but I hope Plex actually thinks things through and ignores these bad data sets.

It’s a company. Personally I am sure they want to give us the best result. Sometimes they have to put personal aside and put Business first.

But tbh I rather have an enhanced Optimization tool for 20$, that replaces handbrake, is fully integrated than stuff like podcasts. You can take it further with a managment tool for things like audio, subtitles, adding more agents etc.

They gave us a lifetime account for Media streaming of music/Video. Maybe it’s time to look what they can charge us with, that enhances the experience in a meaningful way.

But for this Plex has to work 100% first. All of it. Otherwise People will scream.

EDIT: Filebot costs…Handbrake is a bit of a hassle…I don’t have anything to overview my library and check for missing subtitles on Example Greek (as far as I know).

So that means that far less than 2% of servers are using Channels.
Does this mean Channels will also be removed (or not added) to future versions of Plex Server software?

Without looking, as that statement came from the blogpost. 2% of total users have been using Plugins.

Total users means server owners and all of the people using that server. So <2% of servers would be actively using Channels.

The colors could (should) go. I would prefer a black background.
The UI is very busy. Too much stuff I don’t want in each section. I don’t need Plex telling me what to watch.
I do like the navigation. TV, Movies, Videos, Photos, Music all in their own categories.
I have 9 Movie libraries and 4 TV libraries.

And vice versa… people hate the new UI because it doesn’t function properly. Once that gets sorted, many will lose their hatred I’m sure
Personally I don’t hate the new looks. Tbh I don’t care much about the way it looks, since I don’t look at it. I just want to play my content in the most efficient way possible.
It was only when that got severely crippled that I started to notice things  Once that get sorted, I’m good with the new UI.
