Always missing "The" "El" "Der" "Die" "Das"

Server Version#: Newest
Player Version#: Newest

Almost all the Movies who started with “The” “Der” “Die” “Das” are sorted wrong because PLEX will always delete the 2-3 Letters before at English and also other Languages like Spanish or German Movies.

So you will have to change manually hunderst of Names just to Order it by the Name.

Why is this so and how can i change this, that the really Movie Name will be the Name to Order?

Yes, because that’s standard practice for alphabetical order of titles.

This is done to avoid that 30% of all English movies are accumulated under the letter T (or 20% of all German movies under the letter D).
Ask yourself: if you are thinking of a movie, are you usually putting the article in front of the title within your head?
I can only speak for myself, but I often omit these articles. So to me it is beneficial, that Plex is omitting the articles when it generates the ‘Sort Title’.

It is also usual in bibliographic sorting, to move the articles behind the title, after a comma. While that is indeed ugly, it serves the same purpose. To sort the index by the first word after the article.

Edit the https://support.plex.tv/articles/201105343-advanced-hidden-server-settings/
of your server and clear out it’s list of ArticleStrings.
This will prevent the stripping of the articles from future additions to your library.
It won’t change anything for all the items which are already in it, though

Thank you so much for the fast response, i will try it for the next time, now i have had changed far over 100 Files.

Yes, i also think its different and a kind of a habit, we usually use these letters before, doesn’t matter if we speak or write it.

Hello @OttoKerner

Now i checked my pereferences.xml File.
There isn’t a String named ArticleStrings
(Ii use the Plex Pass if this should switch some Settings somewhere else).

Here is a copy of it, some Data i replaced with “X”

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<Preferences OldestPreviousVersion="1.14.1.5488-cc260c476" MachineIdentifier="X" ProcessedMachineIdentifier="X" AnonymousMachineIdentifier="X" MetricsEpoch="1" GracenoteUser="X" AcceptedEULA="1" FriendlyName="X" PublishServerOnPlexOnlineKey="0" PlexOnlineToken="X" PlexOnlineUsername="X" PlexOnlineMail="X" PlexOnlineHome="1" DlnaEnabled="0" CertificateVersion="2" PubSubServerPing="38" sendCrashReports="0" LoudnessAnalysisBehavior="never" OnDeckWindow="15" allowMediaDeletion="0" WebHooksEnabled="0" CloudSyncNeedsUpdate="0" LanguageInCloud="1" ButlerTaskGenerateAutoTags="0" ButlerTaskRefreshEpgGuides="0" ButlerTaskReverseGeocode="0" ButlerUpdateChannel="0" PubSubServer="X" PubSubServerRegion="X" CinemaTrailersFromLibrary="0" ButlerTaskRefreshLocalMedia="0" ButlerTaskRefreshPeriodicMetadata="0" ButlerTaskDeepMediaAnalysis="0" ButlerEndHour="6" ButlerStartHour="3"/>

Do you have any idea how i can fix this “issue”?

Which means you deleted it earlier.

Keep in mind, deleting or emptying it will not change anything on the items which are already in your library. It will only affect newly added items.

I didn’t modified anything in this File, except the “X” here to post.
Some weeks are gone since i asked about but i didn’t changed it because it wouldn’t affect the already added files.

Finally, this morning i added new files and it happened again, so i remembered your hint and tried to edit the file. But like you see, there isn’t any String like this.

Also a lot of other lines in the linked " Available Preferences" aren’t in this file, maybe they should not be.

Did something change by an Update and they moved this String into another file or so?

Not to my knowledge.
You could try tro add the item ArticleStrings=""

Now i tried with a few new Files, it seems to be working.
(Seems because there are sometimes files which won’t loose the prename).
I also took off the lock from some other files where i had to change manually in the past.
They still stood right also after renew the Metadata.

So i guess its solved now, but i added ArticleStrings="0"
Maybe your hint will work too, but every else String also had an number behind.
(Stopped the Server - added at the end - started the Server)

Tank you for your Support @OttoKerner
