Always transcoding?

Hello,

I see from the FAQ that MP4 H264 movies with AAC audio should be Direct Played on the PS4 app. Mine are encoded that way (according to "Info" in the web UI) but I still see the CPU usage on my server jump to 100% when the "Plex New Transcoder" starts while the PS4 app displays "Buffering". Once the movie is playing the CPU usage drops down to about 5% but it would be nice to avoid the transcoding altogether. The bitrates of the movies are no where near 8Mbps so that shouldn't be an issue.

Is there anything I can do to stop the transcoding or investigate why it's happening?

Thanks.
Ashley

Subtitles ?

Thanks for the reply. How can I tell? I think they don't have subtitles. They are english audio with no subtitles visible when played.

In the plex app under the option to play the file there will be something like playback options where you can choose from all audio tracks/subtitles. Have a look in there. Failing that have a look at the movie in plex web, if there are any subtitles you’ll have a drop down menu allowing you to choose which subtitles you want or just play the file using vlc player and right click subtitles.

Thanks. The movie I'm currently playing has this displayed under "Options" in the PS4 app:

AUDIO: English (AAC Stereo)

SUBTITLES: None

QUALITY: 1.4Mbps (best)

And I can't select the SUBTITLES row. So it seems like there are no subtitles.

Is it some audio transcoding?

There aren’t any subs if you can’t select them there. AAC stereo should play fine as far as I’m aware.

what are the limitations to the PS4 OS for something like Plex ?

Is it possible that in a near future, the PS4 app can be like plex home theater and direct play any file without burning subtitles or transcoding video/audio or are there some limitations that will never allow this ?

I'm in the process of choosing between keeping just the PS4 and upgrading the nas to allow transcoding or adding a mac mini or intel NUC to my video setup to use Plex HT...
