It depends what you’re playing on.

In Plex/web, the setting defaults to Always. A change request has been submitted to change that to Automatic. It’s hoped we’ll see that in the next release but we never know until the Release Notes are published.

You can change the setting yourself in Settings - Web - Player. This is what we currently have to do.

Thank you, tested Automatic but still the same.
Moreover, I need this to be for all people I’m sharing with …

just hoping … will help a lot / CPU usage …

What type of subtitles are you using?

If they are bitmapped types, they will always require transcoding. OTOH, if you use srt sidecars or srt embedded, hose are usually put into the video stream by the client. It does depend on which client app you are using, though. Not all of them support the srt’s as sidecars. (Where they are streamed along side the audio and video components and the client puts them into the stream as it’s displayed.)

This can drastically reduce the CPU overhead, as even some higher end machines struggle to transcode bitmapped subs, when they have CPU to spare transcoding otherwise.

Here’s the kicker. PMS looks at their player’s capabilities, not what you set.

If they’re using a Plex client, they can set subtitles to auto or even force DirectPlay if the know the TV can handle it (PMS clients aren’t infallible)
The default for all the clients is Automatic. Plex/Web was the only one which didn’t default to Automatic. That’s the change coming (we hope the devs can change that sooner than later)

As MikeG6.5 points out, Yes the type of subtitle is important. Bitmaps (PGS) require transcoding to merge into the video stream. Most text types (SRT, SSA, ASS) can be muxed into the stream

All my subtitles (srt) currently & almost all video format (mp4) …
trying to use it in normal browser view (chrome)

Thank you for explaining … hoping all players will use DirectPlay soon with any subtitle

not yet released ?

If you are ref to Plex Web, I’m confident in that the hindrance is not within Plex as such but by the limitations each browser gives it. Thus, if you need sub support in Plex Web, you need to take it up with the one coding the browser. My humble suggestion to you is that, if transcoding is to be avoided at all costs, do not use Plex Web. Use OpenPHT, PMP or other better suited players for such activities. PMP comes with the Plex Web GUI nowadays so that shouldn’t be much of a hindrance there.

the problem I share with 50+, how can i do this for every browser with my friends?
Its impossible, only if there is a way to make it “default” where it should be …

Still >>>>>>>>> !!

please find a solution !!

when are u going to one of the most ANNOYING things in plex ???
do you even CARE what users say !!!

I can assure you that the people in charge of Plex cares, both about you and the software itself. Further, I can assure you that if browsers such as Chrome had the capability to display subtitles - Plex would utilize this.

Let’s try with an analogy and see if that clears things up.

You have a car (this is Plex software). You drive it on the road (this is the browser). Then comes a lake (an obstacle such as subtitles) that you need to cross. There is no road across the lake.

Do you then blame the person who built you the car that it is not water-proof? Or do you complain to the person in charge of the road that they should’ve built a bridge to connect it across the lake?

Plex helps you and says, OK, the bridge isn’t there. We can’t build one because we make cars and are not in charge of roads nor bridges. But you know what? We are good guys, we have something called hovering capabilities (transcoding). It will take a ■■■■-load of power to make your car fly - but we will make it if you have the engine for it!

So you hover across the lake… Though… If you do not have the engine for it… Or you have too many people onboard (too many clients needing transcoding) - you will crash.

So. Again, complain to Google that they have not built that bridge (the subtitle support) or provide a better engine to make your Plex fly. Or just use a client which is not Plex Web…

Thank you Peter_W for you comment;

please check this out;

there is a way to make the sub (showing without transcoding) and its already built in and programmed in PLEX more than year ago … but not implemented as default nor there is a way to do it for all users!

That’s my only issue, the solution is there why there is NO WAY to implement it?
Chrome, Firefox … EDGE … they all have the same issue! its common

The request here is to provide a solution! I’m the owner of the data/server … there should be a way to force all people using my data to see how i set (at least default)

There is a way and its simple!
look at the link just provided… only to change 3 things? we need a new button to make sure its for all please!

FYI - All clients use the same defaults. Plex has no idea what bandwidths user may have at their locations. Some have metered accounts too. We tried to use a value that would give decent video quality without unknowingly using up a person’s bandwidth. It also help for users who share their server, like you. Since we don’t know what type of upload speeds you have, if we set the default to use the maximum available bandwidth, 1 or 2 streams may saturate your upload and affect not only those users, but your server too. We know we can’t please everyone, but we had to pick something and chose to be a little more conservative.

Still waiting … !!!

If you are waiting for Plex to change the default, that’s going to be unlikely.

why …
PLEX depends on “server owners” = no hosting in Plex servers
that means = there should be some advantage for the server owners …

I’m sorry, but I don’t understand that comment.

u didn’t understand?

I’ll explain again …
Plex depends on normal users or server owners?
I mean if you are a normal user who just opened a new account … can you VIEW ANYTHING?
of course … it will ask you to have a share OR to set a plex server yourself!!

thats why i said … there should be some sort of “ADVANTAGE” to server owners !!

**please don’t say u didn’t understand … use google translate **
