it doesn’t seem to put episodes in the the continue watching section. Meaning I still have to go to a separate section, If I have to go someplace else, I might as well use the appleTV app since that will update watched/unwatched, as well as has a list of all the next unwatched episode. (+1 appleTV)
it doesn’t seem to pull in watched/unwatched status from the various services. (and right now watched/unwatched seems to have some major issues when marking manually, supposedly “working as expected”) (+1 appleTV)
for TV shows it just launches the season page on the various service. doesn’t actually start playback (+1 appleTV)
It doesn’t have showtime anytime, just showtime, which are 2 distinctly different services. (+1 appleTV)
it does seem to be able to add Netflix and plex servers to a search (+1 plex)
you guys have tweeted “The streaming struggle ends now. ”. I don’t seem like that at all, seems more of a headache than existing things on other services. it’s more like “the struggle to find something on a streaming service ends now” and even then it’s not that much of a jump. Trying to use this feature to stream something to watch feels like a huge struggle to me.
The only “streaming struggle” I’ve had in the past few months, is trying to use the downloads feature. You guys adding sync back, or making the downloads feature actually be able to download things would do much more to end my “streaming struggle”
I agree with all these comments. So far its a glorified search tool, and everything you mention should be added. I am 2 episodes behind on Picard S02 for example. That should reflect my current watch status as having seen those episodes and do a continue watching button. Even if you cant push watch status to the services, surely you can read those. While I dont like to search a bunch of services for my shows, the streaming/linking portion of this relegates it to a search tool for now.
Another huge deficiency for me: Discover does not “know about” my paid channels on Amazon Prime. Example: I subscribe to Acorn TV via Amazon Prime (so I don’t have the Acorn TV app installed on my TV – I just go to Prime and watch Acorn shows there). Suppose I use the Discover feature of Plex to search on “Candice Renoir.” It does show up under “Watch from the locations,” but only for the Acorn TV subscription app. If I click on that, I’m told I need to subscribe to Acorn TV, but I already DO subscribe to it (via Amazon Prime).
I subscribe to several channels via Amazon Prime so this deficiency of Discover is a deal breaker for me. Until I realized this, I was totally on board with Discover, but now I see it’s pretty much useless for me in its present form. Maybe the ability for Discover to “know about” my Amazon Prime channels will be added at some point. Hoping so.
One solution would be to stop subscribing to the channels via Amazon and start subscribing to them directly (and add their apps to my TV), but no way I’m doing that. I subscribe to them via Amazon for the convenience of accessing them all within the Amazon umbrella – much more convenient than diving into separate apps all the time.
What happens if you click to proceed with on the ‘You need an xxxx subscription’ message?
I get the same message for Ted Lasso on Apple TV +. I press the OK or Next (or whatever it is button) and it takes me to my subscription channel.
I’m not sure if it would do the same thing for channels nested in an app like you’re describing but give it a go.
All that being said there are definitely a few features in this that need adding / ironing out but it would be great to have ‘JustWatch’ functionality in Plex itself.
Thanks for the suggestion, but, alas, no joy. I actually don’t receive a message like, “You need an xxxx subscription.” (unless I’m missing something) Instead, I simply see “Acorn TV Subscription” listed beneath “Watch from these locations” in the Candice Renoir description page (continuing my example). If I click on that choice, Plex launches the Google Play Store app and takes me to a page where I can install the Acorn TV app. I even tried that, hoping maybe the app would “know about” my Amazon subscription, but sure enough, it just wanted me to either login with specific Acorn TV login info or purchase a subscription directly from Acorn.
I think it would actually be pretty easy for Plex to write the code that would take into account Amazon channel subscriptions. They would just need a place where you could specify those channels as part of your Amazon subscription. Then, during a search within Discover, if there was a “hit” on a show in the channel (again suppose Renoir w Acorn TV), Plex would display both an Acorn TV logo and an Amazon logo in the “Watch from these locations” list. If I click on the Amazon logo it would open the Amazon App and take me to the Candice Renoir series (since it’s Amazon that “knows” I subscribe to Acorn and I’m going there via their app, that shouldn’t be a problem). This solution does assume one thing: that the offerings for a subscription service are the same whether through Amazon or an independent subscription. This is (supposedly) true for Acorn, not sure if it’s true for other services.
I believe there is a privacy issue related to this, but the “Continue watching” feature is a must have with Discover, it is a hassle having to mark episodes or movies as watched every time. I hope Plex can negotiate a deal and find the rights to do that. Google TV (android) media player does this beautifully, of course they are google, and the apps run on their OS unlike here.
