For a few months now I have been Optimizing my media with the following settings:
Custom > Universal Mobile > 1.5 Mbps, 480p
I could then configure my iPhone, iPad or Amazon Fire HD Settings > Downloads > Quality > Video Quality = 1.5 Mbps, 480p and this would allow me to download the optimized media without triggering a transcode task on the server.
Suddenly with my new Amazon Fire HD 8 I am receiving There was an error downloading this file when attempting this workflow. I have tried various server versions and nothing is fixing it. I have pinpointed the issue to occur only when I try to Download items that have multiple versions (not just optimized media). I am able to download content with various Download Quality settings if the item does not have multiple versions, but if a clip has multiple versions, I cannot download it when selecting any of the various Quality settings in my player.
This issue is specific to my Amazon Fire HD as I can still download these files as expected on my iOS devices.
Edit: I have worked around this issue by creating new Libraries that point to my Optimized Media Directory. This way my 480p optimized media does not show up as being another version of another piece of media and I am able to download them reliably. Definitely not ideal and strange behavior to troubleshoot—currently wishing I had gotten my kids iPads instead of Fire tablets.
