Amazon Fire TV (2nd Generation) can't direct play

Server Version#:Version 1.25.2.5319
Player Version#:8.27.1.29871 (8fa7950c)

If transcoding if forced by the quality setting or subtle setting then video displays. But direct play results in sound with a blank black screen. This is using a Amazon Fire TV (2nd Generation). Note that the max H264 level for the device is 5.1. This used to work fine.

I got the same problem (black screen, just audio is played) on an Amazon Fire TV Stick 4k Max (2021), so hopefully this get’s resolved quickly as it’s affecting others too.

@anon18523487 can you help here?

Going to need more details. I cant reproduce this. Are you seeing this with specific codecs? Please reproduce and get me logs from app, server, and the xml for the video.

OK. I noticed since the first post that is also happening with our Firetv stick 4k.

I believe that I know how to capture Plex server logs. And how to get the xml for the video. I followed these directions for that before - Captions no longer work - #16 by shark2k .

I don’t know about specific codecs or app logs if those are something different. Just running to make sure I get the right stuff… Thanks…

  1. Enable logging in the Plex Android TV app settings.
  2. You will see the URL in the lower right corner of the screen, http://device_ip_address:32500/logging (note http, not https).
  3. After recreating the problem, stop playback, but do not exit the Plex app.
  4. Point your browser at the URL.
  5. Save the web page to a file, attach to thread.

I currently just have a dozen files for testing Plex - so far all others are played correctly. Just this one with the following media information is having a black screen with audio:

Attached is also the appropriate XML file (had to use.jpg as file ending, as XML wasn’t able to select for upload here in the forum/browser)

Thanks for the info.

Yeah, the forum does not support XML attachments. Should have mentioned that. You can save the info as a text file or zip it before attaching.

The file is HEVC 10-bit Dolby Vision, which is not supported by the FireTV 2nd Gen (it supports HEVC 10-bit input, but only 8-bit output and no HDR/DV formats). Plex Media Server is possibly transcoding the file. Server logs and Plex app logs would be needed to see what is happening.

The FireStick 4K does support Dolby Vision Profile 8. If the FireStick is connected to a DV compatible TV, then, in theory, the file should play OK.
You can monitor playback via Plex Dashboard → Now Playing. It will show you if the video or audio is direct playing, direct streaming, or transcoding.

If everything else plays OK, then it is possibly a defective file.

Do you have other files that are Dolby Vision profile 8? If so, do they play correctly?

See if you can re-acquire the file, if possible from a different source.

I have the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4k Max.
The dashboard is displaying:

Also the TV which is a brand-new Panasonic JZ1500 is capable of displaying Dolby Vision and also correctly retrieving the information (saying it’s playing 3840x2160/24Hz,16:9, Dolby Vision). Though the screen remains black.
Other files also with Dolby Vision play correctly - also in Profile 8. I will check to re-acquire the file.

@mspacek Playback the video on either device, then follow Android logs to get me the log. Repeat on the other device if you want me to look at that too.

@Jdunbar8 I’ll also need to see logs to see what’s going on. The only thing I can think is the 23.976 framerate. Do you have the app set to match the framerate? If it’s on, try with it off. If off, try with it on.

Mix-up on my part. Apologies.

Snag the logs as @anon18523487 suggests. They’ll have additional details.

I used to have the setting of adapt to framerate on. Also setting this to off had the same effect (black screen with just audio). Will gather the logs now and upload them here.

Just looking at the one device tonight, I got a firestick Plex client app push to v8.29.0.30433 (b3774acd) and many of the issues I was having seem to be resolved. Perhaps it was the upgrade to ExoPlayer v2.16.1, not sure. I tested direct play on a number of files with no problems. This is on the firetv v2. I’ll look at the firestick 4k tomorrow. Still experiencing the EIA-608 closed captioning issues but that was reported in another thread and appears to be a server side issue.

Also with this latest app version the named video file just plays audio with black screen.

We must have different problems then because my first take is that it fixed my issue.

Maybe @anon18523487 has an update or idea why the proble still persists.

I was waiting for your log so I could investigate.

I don’t think there will be any logs coming from me as my issue seems resolved with the latest firestick app update that was just pushed.
