Amazon FireTV Stick does not work at all for content with DTS audio

My brother used to have a FireTV Stick, and was unable to play certain videos on it. They would appear to start, but the screen would just stay black, and never start playing. He eventually got an XBox and everything worked so I let it go.

Last week, I was gifted a FireTV Stick of my own and decided it would be awesome to have a little portable Plex/media device to bring to hotels when I travel. Most of my TV content played as expected, but a lot of my high quality, high resolution movies didn’t. After testing around 40 titles, I found that it specifically had this issue with content containing DTS audio streams.

Even though Plex detects that the stick can’t play DTS directly and transcodes it, the FireTV Stick will sit on a solid black blank screen. If I hit a button to get the HUD to display, I can see that it is transcoding because DTS is not supported by the device, but it never actually plays. I can confirm that the server is able to do this normally because I regularly view content on multiple other devices that do not support DTS and Plex transcodes them for the same reason and the playback is fine.

Can anyone else confirm this behavior? I believe this is a bug specific to the Amazon FIreTV Stick Plex software as other combinations of players with my server work fine for all content, and I have experienced this issue on multiple FireTV Sticks which I have tested with (my brother’s, my father’s, and my own).

1080p/dts plays back fine on my first gen FireTV stick. Info shows direct playing video with server transcoding the audio as you’d expect. That’s over my local network, I’ve not tried it remotely.

What server are you using? Hopefully some sort of PC, a NAS just won’t cut it for transcoding duties.

You may find that you have to dial down the video quality - my wireless network can’t push “original” quality on all movies to the FireTV stick without some pausing. If I force it to transcode everything down to a lower quality I get a better experience.

Have you tried forcing an update on the FireTV to get the latest OS on there?
