An error occured when trying to play movies with DTS that was OK previously

Ah, that’s true, it means, different case, I can’t play any videos (they played well befor) once I got restarted my server - seems like it’s updated

Still OK to report it here : could be different but related.
Good luck with it dude !

Does it help ?

Try playing it with your PGS subtitles disabled

Subtitle was already as “none”.
I’ve tried to play it with different subtitle (PGS and SRT) and that doesn’t change the error displayed, it just load more time before displaying it.

Any other idea ?
If you need more informations/logs, feel free to ask !

Tbh nothing jumps out… hopefully, one of the Ninjas will be able to help you

Lets wait for the Ninjas so !

It seems to be the audio stream that causes it

IMO that’s another problem. I’ve tried to play the 7.1 english audio to test if it change anything but I’ve not the needed hardware to play this type of audio.

I’ve been having the exact same problem for the last several days. I’m running Plex Media Server on my Nvidia Shield TV Pro. When using the Plex client on either of my Android devices (Shield TV or Chromecast with Google TV), I have been unable to play any media with audio (I received the same error as the original poster), though viewing photos works fine. I have had no errors when using Plex on my iPhone. I was also able to cast movies from my iPhone to my Chromecast.

I just checked the versions of my Plex clients and server. The client on my Shield was last updated on May 18 (which might be when I first started having problems). My server had a pending update (since May 13)–I’m not sure why it hadn’t auto-updated. I forced the server to update and now everything seems to be working. So if you haven’t already done so, check your client(s) and server for updates.

Hello, thanks for your reply !

Sadly, I’ve no update pending on my server :’(.
I’m using the beta channel (will switch on the public one as soon as this situation will be fixed), version 1.23.1.4528.
I had the problem before the update of the player on May 18 (I’ve done this update just today, but nothing change - problem began May 15 on my side).

Sadly it has started for me too. Movies that used to play fine now fail on FireTV and Samsung S9. The movies still play fine on iPhone. Mysteriously one Samsung TV (2018) still plays movies but another Samsung TV (2020) fails to play content. I had to tell my granddaughter to watch her movie on my iPhone this weekend when she came to visit. I used to be a vocal supporter of Plex but now I tell friends it is a “high maintenance” product with features coming and going and reliability questionable. I only recommend if you want to spend a lot of time trying to keep it running.

According to your logs the Plex Android app is being told by your device that it supports dts audio, so Plex is trying to use that, but then fails when trying to actually play it.

Go to your settings and find the option for passthrough and turn it off. This will stop trying to use DTS.

Hello @anon18523487 and thanks for your reply.
You were right, deactivate the audio Passthrought fixed the issue ! I can play the previously failing movies now, thanks !

Now, I’ve got few questions :

  • what do I lose while setting Audio Passthrough to OFF instead of HDMI ?
  • why does it worked previously and not anymore now ? Is that a feature (perhaps it’s better to not have to use the Audio Passthrough, I don’t know), or is it a bug ?

A summary of my setup to understand well the contexte :

  • TV LG 70UM7100 UHD 4K (with HDMI ARC but not e-ARC so it can relay a 5.1 but not a 7.1 if I understand it well);
  • soundbar SAMSUNG HW-Q900T (compatible 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos) connected to the TV through HDMI ARC (e-ARC on the soundbar side, but work as ARC as the TV isn’t compatible e-ARC);
  • Internet TV BOX (Freebox Pop) running on Android TV, connected to the TV through HDMI; is compatible with all the suround format (Dolby ATMOS and DTS HD included); this is the one running the Plex Player;

So, as my Android TV is able to read all the suround format, 7.1 should not be a problem, neither than 5.1. It’s OK that my TV relay will fail to relay it as it’s not e-ARC, but the player should not crash, right ?

I’ve tried to connect my Android TV directly to the soundbar (so using e-ARC and not simple ARC) but I’ve problem with the resolution I need to fix (when I do it, it only show in 1080p, not in 2160p - perhaps a cable issue).

You will lose some surround audio. Now that you’ve mentioned having an AVR, turn the passthrough back on. In the setting change from hdmi to optical. You will then see an option to disable support for dts. Change the setting back to hdmi.

Can’t say. Maybe you had passthrough off and accidentally turned it on recently. Or your box got an update and only now says it supports dts.

Without PassThrough to HDMI it seems that my soundbar is on stereo mode :/.

OK, I’ve set up my Android TV system (Freebox Pop Player) to not detect automaticaly the “compatible” surround format (set to fully manual, and check all existing as compatible so). Restarted it, then setting PassThrough to HDMI again in Plex Android TV App and… it works !

EDIT : it had worked on an evening, but not anymore :/… I’m back to the PassThrough OFF on Plex Player and auto detection of surround AUTO on Android TV settings… it seems to be not that bad (it doesn’t result in “stereo mode” as announced previously according to my last tests).

Sorry @anon18523487 but I’ve unchecked the post “An error occured when trying to play movies with DTS that was OK previously - #33 by MovieFan.Plex” as solution.
In fact, after few days of tests, it’s not a true solution. With PassThrough to off, my soundbar act like a “3.0” sound system as my left and right rear channels and my subwoofer doesn’t emit anysound. And “3.0” for all audio format including some like AC3 which work well when passthrough is ON (HDMI).

So, to get back to the context : my Plex Player installed on my Android TV (Freebox Pop) can’t play DTS audio anymore, while my hardware is able to handle it. It started to fail on 15 May 2021.
I make test on movies I played without any problem before 15 May 2021 (to be honnest, in the morning of the 15 May 2021 it was working, but in the evening, it wasn’t anymore).
All others app on my Android TV are still able to play DTS. So it sounds like a Plex Player bug, objectively.
Need hep, please !

Did you try ^^.

Oh yea, sorry, I forgot this part.
I’ve tried this too. DTS option was already disable. I’ve tried with all the possible option (DTS and AC3 checked, none of it, one or the other), sadly nothing work (still “3.0” rendering).

Get me the android log after trying ^^.
