android app no longer remote controls HT player.

I have been using this for a substantial time. It worked great a couple of days ago. Today when I fired up the player on the windows PC connected to the TV, it looked WAY different. To top it off, my adnroid app claimed to connect to it and launched what looked like the remote control functionality except that it did not work.
In the past when I fired up the PC app, there was a simple menu down the left side of the screen with only 4 choices, the last 2 being movies then tvshows. This NEVER asked me to choose a user before today, only the android app did that. WHat changed? And how do I get my functionality back? I do IT tech support all day and it is extremely frustrating to be faced with doing more of that when what I really need and want to do is CHILL.

I should add for completeness that I have plexmediaserver running on a Linux (CentOS 6.7) virtual machine (WMware) and all of the media is stored on a Synology NAS. The network is gigabit wired.
