Remote control of Plex on various devices now seems to be broken? Anyone else having issues?

I’m not sure if this is a result of upgrading to PlexPass or if it is a new version of the application which is causing this.

Description of how things worked before - I could connect from my Android phone or web browser to any of my Players on my network (kids tablets, Windows, RaspberryPi, Chromecasts) and regardless if it was already playing something, I could see what was playing and how long left and remotely control it.

Description of how things are now working - Now when i try to connect to any of my players, tells me that nothing is playing and i can rarely get it to do anything at all if there is something playing on the device. If I connect to the device before something is playing, I can then connect, tell it to play something and remote control fine.
this is all well and good, but most of the time I tend to use a remote control or keyboard to start the playing off (as its usually a social decision of what to watch etc) then we usually connect to the device and pause it from the app or another more prominent use-case is when i connect to my kids tablets to see if they are watching anything on it (and promptly stop it so that they know i’m aware they are, and shouldn’t be).

I’ve tried making sure i’m logged in as the same user before i connect but that makes no difference.
is this the new way plex are doing things? is this a plexpass “feature”? or is this unique problem to me and my setup?
thoughts appreciated. thanks
extra thing i’ve noticed just now : it used to stay connected and have the media playing as an “google card” in the drop down android thing. where you could play/pause etc. also had media playing options on the lock screen of the device. it no longer does that, even if you start the media playing FROM the device to start with. when you push the power button of the device it says on the main display which is playing the media that the device has disconnected! :frowning:

also also, i’ve checked using web player as the remote controller and that works fine.

updated android app today.
made no difference.

is this the way it is supposed to work now?? if so i’m very sad about this.

is noone else experiencing/caring about this ?

I had the same thing here, but it just so happens that I switched to the iPhone SE on Friday, and since I’ve been away, Plex on iOS has improved. Anyways, I never figured out the Android issue same as your above, but I would look to the compatibility of your Plex server version and the Android version first. I am on an older version - 0.9.14.5.1595-5c6e524 and Android is 4.23.3.552

well i’m running server version of 0.9.16.3 which isn’t particularly old. I can’t update until my repositories carry the latest build, i didn’t realise that the server was a major part in the remote control aspect. I assumed that the clients talked directly to each other.

noone else?

The version of PHT that I was having the issues with remote controlling was probably older as well…1.4.1.469-47a90f01…

I’ve only had the problem for a couple of weeks, about the same time i as when i bought plexpass which makes me think that it was something to do with that. so far noones confirmed/denied if it is an issue at all other than you.
who knows :frowning:

If you suspect plexpass, perhaps there is some way to validate that through troubleshooting? Wonder if you can isolate by logging out of your plexpass account, creating a non-plexpass account, etc. or via some other method, i.e step by step process? In my case, I was always plexpass too (lifetime), so we share that.

actually is this anything to do with the server version anyway? you can run and remote control other clients without actually having a server on your network.

you’re right, i’ve signed out of everything on the server and all of the clients and it makes no difference. the only way i can see that something is playing and control it still is if i start the media playing from the device in the first place. :frowning:
