[Android App] nuVue for Plex - your media server sidekick

As if nuVue didn't add enough convenience to your media experience, version 1.3.1 now adds the ability to start playback on connected clients* with just a few simple taps.  Also in this release:

- Added option to flag unwatched items or hide watched items
- Added support for Media Browser mixed TV and movie libraries
- Bug fixes and enhancements

(*does not include Chromecast devices)

Looking for Plex users that have libraries shared with them to test playback functionality.  I don't have a comprehensive enough setup to give this a proper soak, so if you're game, sign up to be a tester with the link below. If the version that is installed is not 1.3.3.b1, then give the Play Store a little while longer to propagate the app. Specifically, test that you can playback media that is on your local server and media that is in shared libraries.  Please report back with any issues, including what type of device you attempted playback on.  Thanks.

A new beta has been pushed to the Play Store (v1.3.3.b2) that corrects an issue connecting locally to Plex servers that use non-standard WAN ports (i.e., not 32400).  Anyone who uses a remote port other than 32400 can test by connecting to the local WiFi where your server resides, signing out of Plex in nuVue, signing back in, and ensuring that content is fetched and that you see a cast icon from the media details screen (if you have clients that announce themselves as players). Thanks.

nuVue 1.3.3 is live in the Play Store. Of note for Plex users:

  • Fixed issue connecting locally to Plex server with non-standard remote port number
  • Fixed issue starting playback of media located on a Plex shared library

nuVue now has a web presence at http://nuvueapp.com as well as new Facebook and Twitter pages.  Visit, share, like, tweet, enjoy.

nuVue 1.4.0 (a.k.a., the "what's new is what's old, what's next is what's new" release) is rolling out now.  Not only will you never miss anything new that is added to your libraries, now you will also be able to see what TV series and movies are currently in progress and start or resume playback. Plus, we will be coming soon to the Amazon App Store.

Plus, we will be coming soon to the Android App Store.

Do you mean Apple App Store?

Do you mean Apple App Store?

Oops...no I meant Amazon.  :)

Ahh okay.  Looking forward to widgets, that would make my android homescreen complete :)

nuVue is now available in the Amazon App Store.  Showin' some love to the Fire Phone users out there.

Research poll: If you share your libraries, how many users do you share with? And of those, how many have their own server as well?

10+ users and none of them has their own server.

About 30 shared users

25, have their own server

5 do not

Do you sometimes add entire seasons of a show at once? Now nuVue will collapse episodes from the same season into a single expandable entry. Update rolling out.

For Plex users who have been hoping and waiting for nuVue to support Chromecast playback, here is the official word:

http://nuvueapp.com/blog/update-on-plex-and-chromecast/

nuVue 1.4.2 is rolling out. This update adds the ability to set your notification grouping separate from your media list grouping. So now you can have the app show your media organized by type, but only receive a single notification no matter what is added.  Look for the update soon.

If you're a Plex user that doesn't expose your server outside of your local network, then you probably had problems using nuVue. Update 1.4.3 that is rolling out, will now let you enjoy nuVue just like everyone else.  Huzzah.

Sounds great for IOS, On my server, IOS users outnumber android users almost 3 to 1.

Would we be maintaining the user databases in Nuvue so we can tie the user to their email or phone number for sms?

I'm currently working out the design on that.  Ideally, I would like the users to be able to set that information for themselves, so that 1) if they want to change it, they don't have to rely on you, and 2) if they happen to use shared libraries from multiple servers (i.e., more than one other Plex user), then their notification info will be consistent.  I am considering an idea where users that haven't registered their contact data are sent an "invite" email from our servers that contain a link for them to set the info via a web interface if they don't (or cannot) use nuVue. Then, the users in your friends list can automatically be associated with the proper notification info.

I expect to share more details of how the features are shaping up on the nuVue blog (http://nuvueapp.com/blog) once I make some worthwhile progress on it.
