Android Client ignoring remote Bandwidth Restrictions and Direct Playing. Works on iOS and Roku

Seems the same issue as stated in the link below. I have set the quality to 4mbps in the latest versions of both android tv and android mobile apps. Live TV channels are not transcoded and instead are being direct played at 39mbps as reported on Plex dashboard (obviously overestimated but still more than 4mbps).

The same channels are reliably transcoded to 4mbps on iOS and Roku clients.

Any advice? Is there a specific android client version (more up ti date than in the link below) that has this fixed?

Thanks in advance.

i mentioned this on the plex reddit. Its been like this since august.

Ah, interesting. Thanks for the reply! Do you have the link to the Reddit discussion? Have you found any work arounds for android? Based on research, it seems like it’s happened in the past too and people have found various versions of the app that still work. Not sure why this “bug” keeps returning to only the android client…

it started happening like within the last 4 android updates. It happens on the firestick 4k max, NVIDIA shield 2019, firestick 4k, and firetv cube 2nd gen. Only way i can make it transcode to a quality i want it to do is if i select 4mbps and lower. but if i select 8mbps remote streaming quality and the file is a 40mbps bluray it wont transcode it instead its going to direct play it.

heres my reddit post

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it. The more I look into it, it seems the issue you’re having may be different from what I’m experiencing though. They may be related, but I’m not sure they’re the same.

It seems to be more of a detection issue in my case where android cannot analyze the file and thus streams it full quality/direct. If I manually select convert automatically when the stream is streaming direct play it does convert it to 4mbps. It’s just a pain to have to do that each time you change the channel (makes for a very poor user experience).

As per the other threads with this issue…it seems to happen only when a 720p stream is expected to convert to the 720p 4mbps level. (If a different resolution (ie 1080i channel or 480p setting) is involved then it does detect it correctly and automatically converts.)

I have gone back and tried the 8.0 8.1 8.6 8.7 and all the 9.x releases since June 2022 (and even the latest beta 9.10……) with no difference in behavior.

I know most people prefer direct stream so maybe this isn’t a common issue….but it’s needed in limited bandwidth situations else it’s a buffer fest.

Anyone know of how to address it or which logs can be helpful? I tried looking through them last night and the only thing I could see is that it only happened when 720p streams were not able to be analyzed. 1080p were detected and converted.

I have the exact same Problem with Nvidia Shield.

In the Setting I set the remote quality to 12 MBps but no matter what File i open it will Direct Play it . Even 40 Mbit Files are Direct Played.

It only starts to transcode when I set the Quality inside the player.

Please Fix!

yes this is the exact same problem. Only way to get it to transcode is to set it in settings to 4mbps or lower. Anything higher and it direct plays no matter what

Push it!

this problem is still present in the latest updates.
