The Android TV client needs the ability to set “Convert Automatically” by default for live TV only. Many of these OTA channels are upwards of 50Mbps, which presents problems even over wifi-AC 5Ghz. Letting the server hardware convert automatically by default would alleviate having to this manually every time I change the channel. I don’t want to set this globally for all local strreams, as all of my content is less that 25Mbps, so they direct play fine.
Over 50 Mbps per second seems like a lot for OTA. Since we don’t have subchannels up here in Canada, we get pretty high quality with the full 18 Mbps (pretty much the most you can get under ATSC 1.0). I rarely see more than 8 or 10 Mbps from US channels since the bandwidth is often split with subchannels.
I did have trouble playing live or recorded TV in Plex unless transcoded. But I really think that must have been problems with Plex because now, in Jellyfin, I can direct play recorded or live TV and I never have any problems.
