I’m having issues with recorded content, when you try to play it the spinner just spins and it won’t play. The only way to make it play is to change the quality (I can choose the highest quality and it will work fine). I have a 2017 Sony 55inch Android TV, I am sure it can handle direct playing these recordings.
What I’d like to be able to do is to force it to direct play as a test. There doesn’t seem to be an option for this though. My old tv (a 2014 Samsung using the community supported Plex client) had an option to force direct play and it worked well.
I assume you are not using the beta version of Android. The new beta version they have introduced the Exoplayer V2 with plex improvements. Put it this way NOW with Exoplayer V2 even my android phone direct plays .ts files directly from the server.
Its had a few bugs as they are modifying the player but overall looks very good.

Where are you all located, btw, and are you doing cable card or OTA? I’m in the United States and doing OTA via HDHR Extend. I have two 2017 Sony Android TVs (an x900e and an x800e), and I haven’t had issues playing back DVR or Live TV in quite a while on either the beta or current client. I was suffering through the audio sync issues with AC3 and the TS container for DVR and Live TV for some time, but that has gotten significantly better in the last four months. I do post-process remux to MKV and convert audio to AAC, which has always allowed recordings to direct play and entirely mitigated the audio sync problems, but even without doing so, I’ve never needed to force a transcode to get DVR recordings to play back.
It seems that the latest release (yesterday I think) of the Android client now plays my recorded content using Direct Play! This is hopefully going to be a big step forward in terms of usability.
What I had also found (before the latest release) was that if I turned on the transcoding option while recording that it was able to at least play back at the original quality. Now that the new client is out, I’m going to try turning off the transcoding again and see if it will still Direct Play.
