Continuing the discussion from Plex for Android:
Hello all, I’m new to Plex and recently installed latest versions of Media Server and Plex Android TV client. I like it much but noticed that with some videos (usually home videos) I have problems that they stutters (direct play) and application says: “Your connection to the server is not fast enough to stream this video.” This is misleading and has nothing to do with network connection. I’m on 5Ghz network with 500Mbps connection speed to my server. Emby works just fine with all this videos and older versions of Plex (up to 6.12.0) as well!
I’ve searched a lot and on the internet lot of users mention this issue but it seems to be ignored by Plex developers. I believe it’s a trivial issue which can be easily solved. Here I will elaborate why…
First - I have two test videos in exactly the same format - both were taken on iPhone X in one day. I’ve run media info over these videos and all attributes are exactly the same. So this is the first odd think - one video plays normal, second stutters with this message displayed. The only difference is video length. One is 12 seconds, the other 56 seconds. Needless to say, if I try to play it on PC via browser or Plex fat client - it works. Even if I cast to the TV via AirPlay it works! The problem is only on Android TV app so it’s obviously an application problem - tried on Mi Box S and Nvidia Shield 2019 - same behavior.
So I was searching more. If I play this problematic video I can see in Plex monitor that there is huge network bandwidth but the video is just frozen. It moves from time to time and eventually it plays completely but it can take 5 or 10 minutes instead of a minute and traffic is about 200Mbps all the time until it finishes - this is definitely wrong.
In logs I can see lot of these messages:
May 24, 2020 17:17:34.143 [0x7f6012d52700] DEBUG - Failed to stream media, client probably disconnected after 1856336 bytes: 104 - Connection reset by peer
Then it makes a new connection immediately but the same message again after a while.
Finally I’ve searched more and installed various version of Plex AndroidTV client and found that the functionality was broken exactly in version 6.13.0 and I think because of this change: “Brand new video player with more direct play capabilities and improvements.” In all newer version the problem persists so it’s already for 2 years and no fix.
Version 6.12.0 works just fine.
Hope someone from developers will look and compare these two version and eventually fix this behavior. I would really like to use Plex but this bothers me pretty much. I can provide some more data if anyone is interested.
Do you encounter the same behavior ?
