I’ve had Plex (with Plex Pass) for years. For quite some time now I’ve had quite a few problems with Plex. “Your connection is not fast enough”, media that simply refuse to play, lots of buffering/stutters.
I have an old dual x5670 server with SSD cache drives, wired 1Gb internet and even tried upgrading from just using chromecast on WiFi to a wired 1Gb Shield but still getting errors (I get a stable 700-800 Mbit to my workstation on WiFi).
So I tried Emby. And after it had scanned through my media it’s faster than Plex has ever been. Loading files are pretty much as fast as I remember Plex used to be, but skipping/searching seems much faster. There are issues with some of the files I struggle with on Plex. But instead of getting “connection is not fast” errors or the playback just freezing on Emby it just stops. I can then select “playback error” and it automagically fixes it. Much simpler to explain to my family.
But maybe this isn’t a fair comparison, after all I’ve had my Plex install for a long time, the DB might be a mess out of this world…
So I deleted my Plex server and started a fresh one. But that wasn’t it. Same experience and a definitive nail in the coffin. Guess it’s time to shell out for another lifetime pass…
So long and thanks for all the streams
