Why does plex suck so much now

It seems with every update my plex get worse and worse. I’ve spent tons of money on hardware and one I get things stable another freaking server update and buffering begins. I’m hardwired from my nas to router and my tv is hard wired to same router and I can’t even play a movie at 720 without buffering every half second. WTF Plex.
Anyone else? Is there a better alternative to plex? I’m really tired of this.

For me the “alternative” is Emby. It is different and coming from Plex takes some getting used to but it works very well and, again for me, does not have most of the bloat ware that Plex has become infested with.

Plex works well for a lot of people and most that use it never have any problem but Emby is a god deal leaner.

I use Plex for a few things but Emby has mostly become my go to system for my media.

Yeah, something isn’t right here.

Where is PMS installed? Your NAS? Are the videos you’re trying to play direct playing, or is something making them transcode?

Hey Noah, everything I’m using is within 3 feet from each other. My PMS is hardwired to my NAS, and TV with an Apple Time Capsule. At first launch the movie was direct play but was buffering so I tuned down the quality on the player. Went from 22.9 Mbps down to 4 Mbps and still buffering.
Not sure what to do now. It’s New PC, NAS and drives all within the last year. I’ve spent a ton just trying to get this thing stable.

If Emby had better clients, I’d be all over it. I still find the Plex clients easier to navigate and find things… although they quickly seem to be shooting themselves in the proverbial foot in that regard.

EDIT: It appears I have not checked them out in a while. The Emby Roku client appears to have undergone some significant improvements since my last visit.

only time i’ve ever had buffering issues is when the video file is borked… my pops who lives 1k miles away encounters buffering, i tell him to close the app (roku) and start again… fixes it everytime, regardless of direct playing.
not saying this is it but what’s the read speed of your HDD’s? i specifically get 10-15k.
i don’t know much aboot NAS systems but is it trying to do a backup of sorts? or how about time capsule?

I’m looking into my time capsule now. But If I go wirless with my tv I still get buffering. In the next room I have another movie playing wirelessly at 12 Mbps and no buffering. Weird!

Hey Noah, everything I’m using is within 3 feet from each other. Soooo… I have no issue at all with my set up, I share with a guy 9000 miles away. I have iMac as a server and a lovely 65"LG OLED, I use WD Drives in USB3 cases, 2 iPads, Ethernet,HDHomeRun and it all works.

For me it hardware that can cause all these headaches. For example: 95% Hardware and selection, 3% Plex software bugs, 2% stupidity ( human Error). Please take percentages as a illustration only.

My motto, keep it simple and life will be good with Plex

Because instead of fixing the basic features Plex uses all their energy into developing weird features no one is asking for and no one will use with the expectation that that will be the final solution for getting out of the “pirating” business and been seen as a “legitimate” company. However, it never works and they only continue making their loyal fanbase angry forgetting everyone has a limit.

It is not acceptable that the Photo Gallery is completely unusable because it takes 10 to 20 seconds to load a picture because they decided they needed to transcode every photo. It is faster to stream your pictures from the cloud than from Plex.

It is not acceptable that after so many years the sync functionality (for which you have to pay for) still struggles and the solution when it stops syncing is deleting everything from the client and start again, on top of that syncing is mega-slow, and you can’t blame transcoding for this, even after considering the transcoding time it is still mega slow.

It is not acceptable that subtitles support is still poor. Several well known subtitles formats are not supported, and even if they are text based Plex can’t “transcode” just the subtitles to another supported format, but it triggers video transcoding instead. Seriously?

And those are the major problems I have to life day to day, I am sure other users have different problems.

Edit: The Plex Dance ™ … why? why? Plex is slowly becoming a meme.

Been using plex for several years and dislike the updates, tried them all . The ui is crappy along with being buggy. Plex 7.3 for android to me works the best on my 8.1 tv box. Not looking to update at all. Any of the newer versions suck and get worse with every update. Plex is a great streaming app using your local or friends server
