Antenna strength

I have been using Windows Media Center for 10 years now. I am trying Plex as a replacement. Any time I try to watch TV or record TV Plex tells me that the antenna signal is not strong enough. I have WMC running off the same tuner as Plex and I get a great picture without any pixelation on WMC. Any ideas on how to fix this issue?

Have you got your tuner set to HD in DVR setup

Maybe. I did record something yesterday. But it kept going in and out and less than 5 minutes into it said I could not view the show. How do I see if my tuner is set to HD in the DVR setup?

Thanks for your reply also.

Ok, manage Live TV and DVR. Then DVR settings

I remember that screen. It does say “prefer HD”

What make/model of tuner?
What is the exact signal strength?
(HDHomerun Tuners, for example, can access signal reporting as well as output that reporting to a cell phone app).

It is a Hauppauge Quad tuner that is internal to my desktop. I am not sure of the actual strength. I never really thought about it because WMC has never had a problem with that.

Well, the issue I was concerned about is with an HDHomeRun. Some units (most?) can’t deal with 100% signal strength requiring some attenuation. Your tuner should be OK, but if you have really strong signals it could be an issue.

One way to find out quickly is to insert a splitter into the antenna line right before the tuner. If the problem resolves, you need some attenuation. If the problem gets worse - you need a better antenna.

That’s in a nutshell. There are virtually endless possibilities for failure - those are just a couple.

There has to be some setting I am missing. Channel 2.1 I get the antenna strength message. Channel 2.2 works fine. I tried to watch the video using my Roku and i got an error message about it cannotplay smooth. I can play that 1 recording on my phone. I can also play tv on my phone just fine. I realize my phone is lot smaller than my tv screen. I have no idea why it is happening. Roku tells me I have the latest app and I also have the latest version of operating system

I still don’t have a solution. I have re scanned everything. I have reconnected the server. I am at wits’ end. I cannot even get it to go thru a 30 second commercial without dying. It says it cannot playback because of low signal strength. If I go to the same channel but a sub channel (2.2 vs 2.1) I get the sub channel perfectly, no issues. I know most of the people who have answered have been users and I am grateful for the answers. I just want to know why this is happening.

I would suggest until you can see the elements of the signal you’re receiving, like Strength, Data Rate, Data Quality - this will be difficult, if not impossible to troubleshoot.

The means to see that information exists within the tuner - somehow - or by other means, particularly a phone app that can inspect a network tuner (may not be an option in your case).

2.1 and 2.2, relatively speaking should, to the layman, be right next to one another, but gawd knows if that’s the way it is in real life. Until you can inspect the signal parameters -or have someone do it for you through logs/other it may remain a mystery.

Where are you?
What is your zip code?

Seeing what you may be seeing may help.

30076, just north of Atlanta in the suburbs. The interesting thing is Windows Media Center has no problems getting these channels.

I can also see these channels without any issues on my phone using my Plex account, just not on my TV. In my mind that is more a Roku vs. Plex issue.

Every channel I want to see has strength of 100% with no correctable or uncorrectable errors. I can see the channels perfectly fine on Windows Media Center and also the WinTV 8.5 program. The only time I have a problem is with the primary channels using my Roku. I can even see them fine with cell phone using the Plex TV app. The primary channels are my issue. The secondary channels (Cozi, Laff TV, etc) come in just fine.

Anyone have any other suggestions???

That is certainly odd.

At this point one would hope an Employee/Plex-DVR Ninja would happen along to help you - and I really hope that happens.

In the meantime my suggestion is the obvious - don’t unplug WMC yet.

Yes, I am still recording and watching with WMC. This is very perplexing

I hope someone who is an employee or Ninja can help.

Nothing. I guess I will have to cancel it and see if I can find any other service that can work with my system. Strange thing is 2 other programs get the video from the antenna absolutely fine. It is only Plex on my roku that is garbage and I can not play live tv for more than 30 seconds.
