Any idea why Plex shows "The Paramounts" instead of "unknown artist"?

I have a very large collection of downloaded and ripped music, some of which is not properly tagged. For some reason, Plex is showing the artist as “The Paramounts”, which im pretty sure isnt really a band. A first noticed it a few months ago when PlexAmp offered me a mix by “the Paramounts”. I just noticed I have a fair number of entries credited to this fictitious group. Any ideas?

It’s not a fictitious group. At least, there is an artist page for them at MusicBrainz, with a couple releases. Why they’re showing up in your library, if you don’t have any of their music, is likely because Plex incorrectly matched something in your library with that band, or one of their albums.

There could be a number of reasons for this.

  • If Plex is not configured to prefer local metadata, Plex relies on the folder/filename structure of your files. If your folder/filename structure is not organized in the way Plex expects, Plex may have difficulty finding the correct matching information at MusicBrainz.

  • You say “…some of which is not properly tagged.” That alone could be the cause. If Plex is configured to prefer local metadata, Plex is less reliant on the folder/filenames (though it’s still strongly recommended to keep them organized). But if your tags aren’t very accurate, unpredictable results can occur when Plex tries to match your albums.

Thanks for the informative post! I’ll look into it further. Stay safe.
