Any recent changes in how Plex calls its mothership?

I have noticed in the past months that whenever there are Internet problems at home (local server) and I am playing something in Plex the playback will stop after a couple of minutes. I am still logged in and able to browse the library but I can’t start any movie or tv show. Only until the Internet is back I can watch something, which is pretty annoying and totally unneeded. Was something changed recently or I am having some sort of Mandela effect?

If you have internet problems, is it the ISP, or the router itself? Unless you have an additional switch in your house, the router is typically the central network device in most setups, so if the router itself is choking out (resulting in no internet) it might also interrupt any other network traffic locally.

If you wish to test this, the next time you lose internet immediately attempt to access your router/modem by its IP. If you cannot get to it, then it indicates the router itself is down. If you have any other devices/computers in your house, you can attempt to access them too, to see if you have no in-house network due to the router being down.

A solution to fix all this could be simply to purchase a switch. Plug that into the router, and plug everything else into the switch. Anything wired into the switch should still be able to talk to eachother during this outage.

This won’t help much if you are relying on the wifi provided by the router though…

Edit: The reason why I focus on internet access, is that I don’t believe anything has changed in the “plex mothership” connectivity. I think that once you authenticate, that as long as you can actually reach the server, plex has no involvement, so no internet should be needed.

The problem is the Internet, not the local network. Actually the devices are connected via a switch first.

Right then. Very odd. I’m lucky enough to have a stable ISP myself, but the router can sometimes hiccup. What you described sounded more to me like a router hiccup.

Sorry, can’t think of anything else. If Plex does indeed need a constant internet connection even mid-movie, then that concerns me.
