Hi,
I have been using plex for more than one year.
I installed the plex media server on a hpe micro server gen10 with 16GB memory and X3421 cpu, the os is freebsd 12.1 . The server works well. I can watch movies on my laptop and my phone. I can also use a raspberry pi to install the plex client and watch movies on my TV.
Everything was ok until I downloaded a movie with 4k resolution and H.265 encoding. When I play the movie with my raspberry pi 3, it buffers a lot and the fan of micro server gen10 works at its highest load. That was a terrible experience!
Then I searched for some solutions and knew that plex media server uses cpu to transcode video and audio so that every client will be able to playback. Since the X3421 cpu is not powerful enough to transcode the 4k H.265 encoded video, the watching experience is very poor.
Is there any good solution to this problem? For example, could I use a hardware which is capable of decoding the 4k H.265 video itself so that plex media server should only do the streaming work? I have tried to find some hardwares, e.g. mi box s, amazon fire stick and Nvidia shield tv, it seems none of them support H.265 decoding. Do anyone have some recomendations?
