I’m trying to get my wife to convert from Dish TV to Plex for watching her recorded television programs. one obstacle we have is that dish provides us the ability to create folders and then put television shows in each folder such as comedy, discussion, documentaries, etc. the dish DVR will then place any newly recorded shows into the respective folder which is very convenient and provides a great way to organize our television programs without having to scroll through all of them at the same time…
Is there a way to emulate this with the Plex player on Roku?

the closest you will get is to create separate libraries for each tv type
tv - comedy
library root path = /tv/comedy/
/tv/comedy/Show Name (year)/Season 01/Show Name (year) - s01e01 - episodename.ext
tv - documentaries
library root path = /tv/docu
/tv/docu/Show Name (year)/Season 01/Show Name (year) - s01e01 - episodename.ext
and so on
if you are utilizing one of the supported tv tuners, when you setup the dvr recording you can also specify the library and path so the recordings will show up in the applicable library above.
Yes I already have a separate folder for my wife’s shows, but setting up a separate library for each category is a pain in the butt, PLUS I then have to train my wife to specify which folder to save the recording when she finds a new show to record.
Very inconvenient compared to the automation that Dish provides. I hope Plex can provide similar features in the future

Oh hey, I don’t think I have used it, but I think the roku has a folder view mode, where you can browse by folder.
so you just have the main tv library
library root = /tv (or whatever path)
then sub folders as you wish
/tv/comedy/show name (year)/etc
/tv/documentataries/show etc
/tv/whatevers/show etc
I not sure this would work but you could try Sonarr/Radarr. They could monitor specific folders and then move it somewhere else.

well it looks like I’ll have to manually build the folders and then go through 30 television shows to redirect which folder it saves the program. Then I will have to see if my wife will be willing to be educated on how to save these every time she creates a new DVR entry using the TV remote. Oh what fun this will be.
It would be nice if Plex eventually provides a function for this automatically. @ruuk any thoughts on feasibility for this in the future?
Fyi for anyone looking to organize their tv programming by folder, I ended up using the Collections function in plex to tag each show, so now I have 7 “folders” which contain the shows tagged with the collection name.
