I am working on getting Plex to play specific tracks by genre, but there doesn’t seem to be an option to filter tracks like there is for albums and artists. I’m want to grab all music in the ‘Christmas’ genre, for example, but doing that through Artist view gives me all tracks from any artist who has a single song categorized as ‘Christmas’, the majority of which only have one or two songs that actually belong there. Filtering in the Album view is a little better, but that excludes any individual Christmas songs that don’t appear on a Christmas album or, like Artists, includes all songs from an album that’s not entirely Christmas related.
The only way I can tell to sort out individual tracks by genre is to create a collection or playlist manually, but it seems like a very large oversight to not be able to scrape existing metadata in music files in order to sort tracks by genre.
The problem is that genre is recognized/identified per album, not track. I worked around this by having a separate library just for Christmas music but it still is a problem for some of my other music (soundtracks mainly).

yes, I am able to sort by genre, within the web app, my roku stick, and iOS device.
Just go to artists/all artisits, and there should be a filter option, giving you 3 options; genre, country, and collection
I don’t think you read my entire post. I don’t want to filter artists; it causes problems (explained above) when there are multiple genres an artist is associated with. I want to filter individual tracks by genre.
Is this a feature that is likely to be implemented at anytime in the near future?
I’ve come from a Kodi background and all my collection is specifically tagged with individual genre’s by track. This make sense as genre’s are often unique to the track rather than the album or artist and means I am able to play my music by specific genre without all the ‘similar’ stuff.
Been very impressed with Plex thus far but not having this is a major draw back IMHO and is likely to cause issues for anyone serious about their music library organisation.
This is one of many threads asking for improved support of embedded ID3/Vorbis tags.
Since all votes were lost with the new forum changeover, I have taken the opportunity to rework one of my ID3 tag feature requests into a more comprehensive request for tag support.
This would be a great opportunity to consolidate all the votes that were spread across so many threads before, and maybe get some much-needed attention.
