Any work on optimizing ARM code for big/little endian?

hardkernel is making 2 inexpensive sbc xu3 and xu4 that have Samsung Exynos5422 Cortex™-A15 2Ghz and Cortex™-A7 Octa core CPUs that are quite beefy. I know I can load the default ARMv7 code and it will work fine on the little endian quad core but I’d like a compile that utilizes big.LITTLE optimizations with the -mtune=cortex-a15.cortex-a7 option passed to compiler. I want to see if an ARM can finally be powerful enough to replace my fedora FX8 AMD power hungry to stream to multiple plex feeds simultaneously.

@scboley @elan If you comment in the dev part of the forum with an offer to buy one for somebody, I’m sure they would be happy to help and produce a version for that platform?

It should only take a simple recompile of the existing arm7 adding the flag to big.LITTLE and post for testing. Jan Friedrich (uglymagoo) is the person who has already sourced it to work on odroids but I have no idea how to contact him for the recompile.

So I guess I’m asking if anyone that has produced a compile can simply repro with the big.LITTLE and let me test it?

@scboley @uglymagoo If you mention their name they might appear

So a dumb question but with the forum layout it’s kinda confusing where are the dev forums? The arm falls under the NAS builds but they are all lined up with specific brands and there isn’t a straight arm branch.

The odroids are quite impressive for their specs and price points. They have a C1 that is same price as raspberry pi and just blows it away for performance with MMCe available as your storage option which is very fast.

@scboley I suppose your best bet is the synology one, since there are guides on internet for installs on odroid devices that use the build for synology ARMv7 devices.

I think if you find the person responsible for producing that build for PLEX and mention them using the @ syntax, or PM them if their sig says it is OK to do it, they may be able to help.

Only Plex them self can do this, since they are the only ones to hold the part been closed software.
And speaking for myself here, but doubt it’ll happen, since if Plex release such a version, they’ll also have to support it, getting test devices, getting Ninja’s that use those devices etc…

So sadly fails to see the use case here, but could be wrong

Ohhh…

And @tonymccallie : It’s not considered good tone to ping people like this…

This forum is the Feature & Bug Voting forums, and Plex is already watching every thread

/T

using it on the ux4 works great use one for a car streaming only device

No they are not! I have had the thread running at: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/163792/feature-request-support-for-arm#latest

… for 4 months, and there has not been one comment that I can attribute to a Plex developer.
This “feature request” category is severely neglected …

I have a XU3 and my request in that thread is to have ARM devices added to the “good” transcoder list as I get the “server not powerful enough” message, but if I by-pass that bit of the js code(hack) that does the test, the xu3 works just fine at transcoding ALL content …

Support for powerful ARM devices needs to be addressed !!!

(I have compliled plex media server with all the ARM relevant flags and NEON support on ArchLinux)

First, please don’t kill me here, for stating out a fact…

I said that Plex is watching, and that’s a fact
But responding is another thing, and Plex never ever gives out neither timelines, nor plans for the future, not even to Ninja’s

Well then, if they are watching and then don’t even acknowledge the thread for 4 months, then that is just outright rude.

What is the point of even having the Feature Request category then?

All I want is a comment in the thread, even if it is just “We will look into it” as a polite acknowledgment …
It is just a matter of good customer relations … and I am a customer.

It’s a voting forum, where people can like a post, and that helps Plex prioritize as well as see the market for an idea.

As outline in this pinned post:

forums.plex.tv/discussion/46128

It’s not a forum where you can expect Plex to respond

/T

Ok, well folks get out there and vote for this thread and my one referenced below, please …

As an aside, I thought Plex would be most interested in tapping this up and coming market. Who would not want to run a plex server on a small fanless ARM device instead of a big bulky/noisy x86 device if it is capable …which it most definitely is {end of rant}

Well…You did have a low liking rate, so guess you are an almost lone rider

Sorry, but something has to pay the bills

I agree that being interactive in the forum without revealing product
details and acknowledging your customer’s existence would be a very nice
touch being as now there are many players showing up to this arena. I got a
response directly from someone at Embry stating compatibility. Now it’s not
as polished or enhanced as plex but the fact they acknowledge I’m
intelligent and worth answering goes a long way.

Well----With all do respect…

When entering this forum. you did read the pinned posts before engaging, so I fail to see the problem here…
The rules was layout, or ?

/T

That is: " With all due respect" and " The rules were laid out"!

I think the problem here is: That once you have paid for your lifetime “Plex Pass”, Plex has got your money and don’t think they have any responsibility for customer service … as you are not “buying” any more product from them.

Just bad form I say …

I totally agree. Customer “service” is totally different than customer “ignored” …

I have a low “like” rating because I have only been on the forum a few months, … bad assumption …

I don’t actually care how many “likes” I get, what is with this facebook mentality anyway. I am a person not a number, I refuse to be graded like some cattle!! Plex should deal with people, if they want to stay around.
