"appears on" aka track artist support - how was this implemented?

It’s absolutely awesome that the Artist view now shows tracks from compilations/other artists’ albums as “appears on”. For my interest, how did the devs implement this? Is this info now added to the API response, were there any database changes, or does Plexamp launch an additional sql query for something like:

list of tracks where
track artist IS “Artist Name”
AND
parent_id IS NOT IN {array of album_ids where artist is album artist}

Will this will soon be added to the Web UI and other Plex clients as well, or is this a Plexamp-only feature for now?

Additional client request; I don’t know what other clients are planning.

Will this feature show in Android auto soon?

android auto doesn’t really have a good way of showing it.

Would be nice to show the album under that artist. Take Kenny Loggins for example. Top Gun, Footloose, etc. would show as albums in his artist section. Would not have to say appears on.
