Apple AirPlay

Hi,

I was just wondering, is it possible to add in ‘Shairport AirPlay Software’ (http://raspberrypihq.com/how-to-turn-your-raspberry-pi-into-a-airplay-receiver-to-stream-music-from-your-iphone/) to enable playing music from iPhones via AirPlay through RasPlex?

I’ve set up Shairport on another SD Card and it works brilliantly, I just wonder if it could be added to Rasplex either as a service or operating through a channel.

I’m not a programmer so if it’s a stupid question, sorry about that.

Ed

Rasplex already includes Shairplay, which is similar to Shairport.

@NedtheNerd Really?

I must have missed it then. I did see an airplay option and had that checked, but it never shows up as an audio output option on my phone, or does it only work from the Plex app on the iPhone?

I shall have to check again tonight.

I did say that it used Shairplay not that it worked consistently.

AirPlay has been an issue since the release of iOS7 (there is a warning message when you enable AirPlay in Rasplex), sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, as a number of people have said previously in the forum over the past couple of years. I have an iPhone which is still on iOS6 and it works perfectly and consistently.

If you search google you will also see the same issue on both Kodi and OpenELEC (which is Kodi).

@NedtheNerd

Thanks for the clarification. I’ll keep an eye on it and hopefully it should be more reliable at some point.

Hopefully, the people responsible for libshairplay have been making some progress.

I’m waiting for this to be resolved, blame Apple for constantly changing things, how are open sourced groups supposed to keep up?

Just a final point, is there anything special you need to do to enable shairplay or is it running by default?

(i understand that even if it is running it may not be working)

Nothing special, just enable in Preferences.

Regards

I have enabled it now, and all of the other options there too, the airplay icon on my flex server seems to connect to rasplex now, but, neither iTunes, nor my iPhone see the rasplex as an airplay audio option. I’ll keep an eye on it and hope it becomes more stable/works.

Thanks for your info and help.

The best solution for me was to install Logitech Media Server on separate raspberry pi (or another computer) and install on the LMS server shairport2 (by disaster123) plugin. Then install squeezelite (look in the Rasplex forum for how to) on your raspberry pi with Rasplex. After that your Rasplex should have a logitech squeezelite player and a airplay device that uses the shairport. Airplay is disabled in Rasplex settings, but gets airplay through squeezelite.

Shairport and sharplay are no longer working since iOS8, and apparently their development was abandoned.

However there is shairport-sync who works with iOS 9 and is an active project. He should be included in the next release of Debian (N°9 Stretch).

I installed it on another pi and it works great.

@damien.thg Over christmas I installed ShairPort on another SD card and it worked fabulously with my iPhone running iOS9.2 and iTunes 12. The Raspberry Pi showed up on both as an audio output option and they streamed perfectly.

I followed this to install it: http://computers.tutsplus.com/tutorials/using-a-raspberry-pi-as-an-airplay-receiver--mac-54316
or
http://raspberrypihq.com/how-to-turn-your-raspberry-pi-into-a-airplay-receiver-to-stream-music-from-your-iphone/

I can’t remember which set of instructions I used.

@damien.thg I’ve just been reading up about shairport-sync, looks great, are there any chances that it could be built into RasPlex?

I’m not asking you to build it into RasPlex, just if you know if it would be feasible.
