Apple Carplay Plex App?

Mercedes Benz, Hyundai, Honda, Volvo and Ferrari will be releasing cars with Carplay starting in 2015 and other manufactures will follow after. Apparently there is support for third party apps. Does Plex has any current plans for Carplay support? Has any investigation started? I would love to play movies for my passengers via Carplay.

In many areas, you can only use front-seat displays for navigation and audio apps.  I know in some states in the US, video players in view of the driver are very explicitly prohibited.

I think it would be a smart move for Plex to be among the first with CarPlay support… Entertainment on the road is a big market. Fronseat passengers could be limited to audio only, such as music or audiobooks, while the backseat passengers could watch movies and TV shows.

That would be Great!

The good news is that Plex does handle more than just Video, even if it is it's forte.

While there are not presently a vehicle manufacturer that has discussed a "back seat CarPlay" display, there is nothing that would *prevent* this from functioning, as well as enabling content to be split so that video-only entertainment be presented where it not be visible to the driver while the vehicle is in motion besides the code not being publicly available at this time.

Carplay w/ Plex sounds nice, but the implementation would be difficult.

As it is, for long trips, I just mount 2 iPads on the back headrests and have each paired w/ a bluetooth headset.  I then plug a macbook pro into a power inverter, have it create a network, and stream via Plex to the 2 iPads (which don't have enough space for a large number of movies/shows).

It's inelegant, but very effective for long trips, and not dependent on having the car running (for gas and food stops).

Hell, given the price of the rear entertainment systems these days, it's cheaper to buy a couple of iPads just for the car anyway...

I would love to see CarPlay support built into the Plex iOS app, even if it was only enabled for music libraries.

I didn't think it's even something has to be suggested .. It is absolutely CLEAR that Plex must have CarPlay support-not just for movies, and not for movies. For music ..? I don't know what about you but in my house sometimes we use MyPlex to listen to music, and it's GREAT.

So if Apple won't allow movies, the devs can only allow music sections via Carplay.

We'll see how this plays out, but I agree with the poster who uses his ipads instead of expensive car systems.  My son uses an ipad for entertainment on long trips.  He can personally control what he's watching at a small fraction of the price of built in systems.  Better experience, lower cost.  Sometimes simpler is better.

I was just about to submit this as a feature request! Would be great to see Plex audio support for Apple CarPlay!

Like the rest, i would love to see CarPlay be implemented. Heck, even if it’s just acts like a remote(similar to how you can make one client plex controls another). I use Plex exclusively to play music, so something is way better than nothing. Thou, watching videos sound nice, that doesn’t seem to be to safe. And in terms of playing vidoes in the back seat, the higher end head units have hdmi and coaxial output. My Pioneer unit is wired so I can play video from the head unit to the video unit in back. If I can play dvd/bluerays and memory card with movies. i’m pretty sure, there’s a way for Plex to output video to the head unit. Just a thought.

Me too. I voted.

I have a Pioneer AVH-4000NEX in a 2005 Toyota Matrix. I love the head unit and navigation features using CarPlay.

Nearly every day I stream to my Pioneer unit via Bluetooth using the Plex IOS app, which works great; however, I would love to be able to stream movies and tv shows using CarPlay (in park with the parking brake on of course). Please develop this feature. Thanks!

Same here purchased a 2016 VW GTI mk7 and would like to get better Plex integration.

Just YES! Again.

Would love to see it!

If I may augment the feature request?

I own two Volvos, one with standard Volvo Bluetooth and one with 'somewhat better A2DP support but still not the full integration. I’ve asked the local dealership when my system’s firmware update is expected which is awaiting a date from Volvo North America.

I would like to ask if, for not only the new Apple-based support, regular Bluetooth systems built into vehicles a few years older, which allows volume, forward, reverse, and other typical steering wheel functions via the head unit, be available in the Plex mobile app (iOS and Android).

I’ve checked the iOS app, version 4.0.10, and while Google Maps will speak through the car speakers using Bluetooth, Plex does not.

For those who don’t or won’t get the new Apple support in their cars anytime soon, I believe simple ‘google-interface style’ bluetooth audio would be good. It is properly interrupted when calls come and always responds to steering wheel controls (volume, mute, etc). As wider availability of the Apple support occurs, having the Apple protocol be the primary, preferred, interface for Plex to use when mobile makes the most sense, falling back to ‘standard bluetooth audio’ when necessary.

I do not own bluetooth speakers in my home but if Plex does not currently support this, it would be an easy additional feature picked up.

Yes! Absolutely! If Pandora can get a CarPlay app I’m pretty sure Plex once again will go above and beyond. I love Plex, been using it since the end of 2012 and they just keep getting better and better. I’m sure they’ll continue wowing us. I hope to make this PlexPass lifetime very shortly here :).
