Plexamp and Apple CarPlay

I’m loving the new Plexamp app but thought it would be really awesome if it worked on Apple Carpkay, what’s the chances of that?

I wholeheartedly second this. While not driving much these strange days, but lack of CarPlay is obstacle to using Plex in the car.

I understood that with Plex only app why CarPlay would be complicated, but with dedicated audio app, this would be huge.

We’ll see what we can do

Awesome, thanks for the reply, I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

Let me throw my request in here too. It would make it a useful app for those of us with Car Play. Especially where you have to be hand-free legally when driving in many places. It didn’t make sense for Plex, but this is an app that it definitely lends itself to. Would be awesome to have it integrated!

The Prism music app that works with Plex libraries made the Carplay version available in a few days more than a year ago
So what are we talking about?

Rather if you read the statements of 10 days ago …

and compare with yesterday …

   enthusiasm is decreasing …

Oh stop reading too much into things.

Add me to another one wanting CarPlay!

This is the only thing stopping me from making Plex me go to for music

First, thank you so very much for PlexAmp. Music is mainly why I have Plex and this app hyper focuses that for me.

Second, I truly appreciate your CarPlay consideration. That would be huge!

I use Plexamp and Plex both with Apple CarPlay every day. If you don’t have Music or Plexamp or Plex open on your iPhone, the default for Apple CarPlay is to start playing Apple Music(iTunes). Since I don’t subscribe to Apple Music and don’t usually want to play from iTunes, here’s what works for me.

Try opening either Plex or Plexamp on your iPhone. Plex or Plexamp need not be playing when you open either app. Go to either a song or playlist. If you already have a track ready to play(like I usually do), CarPlay will automatically start playing your song in either Plex or Plexamp, depending on what app you have open. DO NOT touch the “Music” icon if you are on the main menu or from the mini menu bar which is displayed on the left side when you are in any app. It is very important that you have Plex or Plexamp already open on your iPhone or this will not work.

If you have any app open, touch the eight little squares at the bottom-left corner of the Apple CarPlay screen and touch the eight little squares. You well then see the main screen showing multiple icons.

Select the icon that says “Now Playing”. Compare the song on your Apple CarPlay screen to the one that’s on your iPhone, if there are the same, you are now connected to Plex or Plexamp player on your iPhone. If “Now Playing” show you the iTunes music app, you will have to close the Music app. Usually(always for me) CarPlay will start playing whatever music player is open on your iPhone whether it be Apple Music(iTunes), Plex or Plexamp.

If somehow you get stuck in the Music app, just close it down by turning the app off by swiping up on the app from the app selection or shutdown app screen. Sometimes this will happen if you have played the Apple Music earlier on your iPhone and CarPlay. CarPlay will not always toggle between Music and Plex. CarPlay gets confused even though the Music app is not the one you have open and displayed on your iPhone.

Hope that helps. I will try to explain further for anyone that needs more help.

PS I’ve owned 3 different cars over the years that CarPlay became an option and it worked in all of them.

Thanks for the detailed post. I have used this method before but unless you are doing something different it is not possible to browse and change your music on the car screen, you still need to do that on the phone which is not the point of car play and is illegal as well.
Hopefully you can correct me as I’d love this feature.

You’re right about the lack of features, such as: Playlist selection, Album selection, etc. with CarPlay and Plex. I’m not sure here, who is actually able to bring these features to us. For instance, does Apple even include this in the developer’s API? If not, it’s an over-site or deliberate attempt to give Apple Music an edge over other players. If it’s in the API, then I agree that Plex should working on making this work in CarPlay.

Your wishes came true today.

Wow that’s awesome, I can’t wait to get my hands on it.
Thanks for the quick turn around, just one more reason I’m always raising the Plex flag to everyone.

Yes. Wow. I was just getting ready to tell you CarPlay now has Plexamp Playlist, Recents, Library and a whole bunch more. Saw it today when I got into my car. Thanks Plex.

Any timeline for Android Auto support? Hopefully not too long!

90% of the work applies to both of them (shared code), so that should give some indication.

Thanks, looking forward to it. Plexamp is that good I’ve ditched my Roon subscription!

That’s great news!
