Spot on, release notes are lacking any clarity or any fix intent. ![]()
Yep.
That said @hsousa
All that’s left for me now is mostly to do with Spatial Audio with AirPods (Pro and Max)
-
All files with any type of surround sound still reports as Spatial Stereo rather than Multi-Channel.
-
Ironically, all my very old files with only stereo soundtracks (and seemingly regardless of that soundtrack being stereo AAC, MP3 or AC3) refuse to play at all. They just sit there with the timeline stuck at zero. They do however all play fine when using my HomePods rather than Spatial Audio with AirPods.
So obviously getting them to play at all (and preferably with Spatial Stereo) will move me a step closer to relying on Infuse less.
Beyond that I’m pretty impressed.
Does 8.37 (8650) include the MoltenVK player, or is this a reversion to the old player? Just want to confirm before I start supplying feedback.
Thanks
EDIT: DV/HDR color looks accurate on iOS at least (vs 8.37 8587)
Those two things are my only major long continuing hassle. Other than that, I’m rather pleased with the progress that’s being made with the Apple TV Player ![]()
On the subject of HDR /DV. As this is the first build of Molten that I have been able to get working I was just curious about DV.
I saw the posts about DV/HDR looking off and that they now seem fine.
Are the DV files you mention Profile 5 and/or is Profile 8 still doing Fake DV or is it now using the native Apple support for Profile 8 in the way that Infuse does?
I was more interested that my files will actually play rather than looking into what Plex is doing with DV files.
I’ve tested Profile 7 (with HDR Fallback) and Profile 8. On 8587, both were displaying washed out like looking at a LOG image on both iOS and AppleTV 4k… on 8650, both are displaying correct tonemapping/color on iOS. I haven’t had a chance to test the AppleTV yet as I’ve been on the road, so I cannot speak to if this is a fake DV or accurate DV for the profile 8, though if it is a fake DV, I don’t know if I’ll be able to correctly test for that without knowing if Plex is supporting Profile 8 like Infuse does.
Profile 5 is still a no go guys
Had a chance to test 8.37 (8650) on AppleTV HD (A1625) and the “experimental player” is completely unusable. Both H264 and HEVC 1080p content stutter or freeze horribly, and while sometimes h264 playback will catch up, audio sync constantly drifts and stutter returns. Audio tested was EAC3 and DTS-MA.
Audio old or new player changes have no effect.
Overlay reports thermal state as “nominal” and Misc State as “unknown”
Forcing Plex to use the old video player does correct the issues, so it looks to be tied to MPV compatibility issues.
Edit: tvOS is 17.5.1, content is MKV container and infuse has no issue with this media.
I believe 8650 is part of the standard branch so will not be using the experimental player. All experimental builds say so far have said so in the description.
I don’t think experimental player is the same as Metal. Experimental = Plex rather than MPV I think.
No new builds have been posted with updated player work yet. All new builds you’re seeing (and apparently having a good experience with
) are the Public Beta ones that have none of these changes. If you don’t want access to these builds, ping me and I’ll remove you from that list.
Like I mentioned earlier, the only build we’re actively looking for feedback on is 8.37 (8587). That build isn’t ready for all-day usage (see known issues), but it’s the one where we’re actively working on.
Build 8.37 (8585) is there simply to provide users with an updated MoltenVK build while we work on this, because we understand that it did improve experience for some folks that had issues with the public version of the app.
Thanks!
Are you able to confirm if this includes having DV content using the correct colour space for profile 5 and 8?
So that means that 8650 is part of the standard non-MoltenVK “experimental player”? So HDR/DV issues are not resolved with the “Molten” player?
8587 is also displaying the same issues on an AppleTV HD with stuttering and audio sync issues with 1080p H264 and HEVC Media as I reported with 8650. It looks to be affected on both tvOS 17.5.1 and 16.6, making both the old “experimental player” and Molten player unusable on AppleTV HD. Reverting to the “old player” works, so maybe it makes sense to have Plex default to the old player when detecting this hardware now?
Can we add something to release notes to clarify which TestFlight versions are running the Molten “experimental player” and which are running the “old” experimental player? Or maybe refer to the Molten player as “Molten” in the app instead of “experimental” player to avoid confusion?
Might be a bit early to make that call, but it’s certainly something to consider seeing as that device’s capabilities are quite limit after 9 years. I’ll add an internal note for discussion with the team.
The player-specific betas include explicit information about it in the release notes, and absolutely nothing else. Public betas include, well, the normal release notes.
I’ll also add the in-app visual indicator as a discussion point with the team.
Thanks!

Sorry, I think the confusion is stemming from the inconsistency in the release notes I see in TestFlight. On the AppleTV, they refer to the player in 8587 as the “experimental” player, which is also how the “old” non-Molten mpv experimental player is referred to as well elsewhere. On iOS, 8.37(8585) specifically states that it includes the MoltenVK and there are no notes for 8587.
Yep I’m pretty sure that on tvOS build 8587 release notes it referenced Molten VK when it originally launched.
Then what with completely different release notes for the same build on tVOS and iOS (as you illustrated) and a clear confusion in the last 24 hours (judging by comments from other users) as to what exactly is the experimental player it’s become quite the mess.
And I was told in this thread that we’re beta testers therefore we should find it easy to keep track of which beta is which ![]()

Oh wow, I see what happened now! I updated the release notes in AppStore Connect, but failed to update it for both iOS and tvOS!
My bad, sorry folks. Once again, build 8587 is the one to test. I’ve double-checked and the release notes should be correct now and say “This build has the Experimental Player and should be used for the Playback Beta users.”
Sorry for all the confusion.
We’re hoping to have a new build tomorrow with a few fixes based on some of the recent feedback.
Thanks for helping clear this up @dklein! ![]()
Confirmed, TestFlight has the proper description now ![]()
Can I please get an invite for the Plex Testflight? It really stutters badly on my AppleTV 4k 3rd gen
