FYI, looks like the player experience options have been added to tvOS and iOS in 8.41. Thanks!
@Craig_Holliday while testing the new hevc encoding came across a bug.
Using the old mpv player (8.40), going from a hevc live tv source into PiP continues to play without a hitch.
Using the new mpv player (8.41), going from a hevc live tv source into PiP seems to call on the “old player”, which is only compatible with hls mp4 in hevc, not mpegts which it is trying to transcode to.
Should the player be trying to swap to the AVplayer in this case? The old mpv seems to continue using mpv for PiP.
For whatever it’s worth, avplayer supports avc/hevc ts!
All that’s needed is to simply change the extension from .ts to .m3u and it accepts. Like literally just rename it, no converting needed.
@Craig_Holliday I’ve been playing around with the latest test build and for the most part everything seems to play video wise. I was wondering if there are any plans on supporting Dolby Atmos like Infuse does? I know it might not be true atmos but I still like the upwards firing speakers going off. Also, when I compared it to Infuse, their sound seems to be louder than when I play the same videos on plex.

Not sure if you still need logs for the crash when viewing tv shows but im on 8.41 and this occurs for me every time i open season 2 of monster.
Bug confirmed here with the latest build, background music plays well and at full volume, dialogue is suppressed and barely audible.
@gmcinalli is that on an AppleTV or iOS/iPadOS device? I’ve been able to replicate something similar on iPadOS 18 when not using headphones and stoping/starting playback again usually corrects the error. I haven’t been able to replicate the issue when using headphones.
iOS/iPadOS have the same problem with audio coming from the speaker, audio is ok on tvOS and with headphones on mobile devices.
I have NOT seen any Audio issue with (8.41) on ATV 2022 although with TV series if in between Episodes stays stationary on the OCD with Auto play OFF. Theme music I believe has random short audio bursts. This quickly disappears to silence once again to only happen again later.
To add, I believe this has not been a regression but has been present for a while. Theme Music Setting is Active
I’ve been testing the new HEVC transcoding server beta with the latest Apple TV client beta, and I’ve noticed that for the old Apple TV HD devices, they are able to play HEVC transcoded material in both the old player and the experimental player as long as media is 10 Mbps HEVC or less (based on chris_decker08’s new HEVC bit rate scale, I know the client doesn’t report correctly since his changes).
Would it be possible to set a limit for these older AppleTV HD devices either via a tvOS profile.xml or in the AppleTV client app itself to force a transcode if the source is HEVC media greater than 10mbps? I’m thinking similar to how clients force a transcode if resolution of the source media is too high? This would only be for the AppleTV HD client, not any of the iOS or AppleTV 4K clients as they are not showing the same HEVC limitations.
If we can set that limitation, I think we can keep these old devices functional with the experimental player and not have to worry about HEVC content causing the stutter and sync issues I was seeing previously.
Thanks! Let me know if you want any logs or tests.
Was comparing the experimental player to the regular mpv player and found that the AV sync on the regular player sits around 0.002 where as the experimental player sits between 0.05-0.09 which is quite noticeable.
At the end of a TV episode it also seems to blow out to about 0.15.
Anybody else having these issues?
Edit: in reply to @SE56 latest ATV4K (want to keep all the info in one reply)
Though with some further testing I’m thinking it’s to do with the content I was testing. Although the AV sync sits around 0.07 on avg for the experimental player - it seems to be fairly accurate with the eye test for audio sync for all my other content.
Weird one but problem a me problem not a plex problem.
Model ATV ? I have not noticed any AV Sync that is concerning but thank you I will now check randomly. ![]()
Hello, I have submitted the form to get into the Test Flight. Look forward to hopefully getting access.
My primary problems with my Apple TVs have normally been the audio sync issues. I believe it mostly occurs with Higher Resolution (4k) video. It is very clear that the audio does not match up with the mouths. I have my audio offset set to +225ms but it still seems off and have a hard time dialing it in. Ideally with the work going in we would not need such a delay as I have never had to set one on any other devices or even on different apps on the same Apple TV. Thanks!
Hi everyone. In TestFlight, I’m only getting 8.40
The TestFlight gods answered and 8.41 was available overnight.
Does 8.41 (9404) have the experimental player, or should we stick to 8.41 (9333)?
Inside TestFlight it says “the developer removed you from the test program” but I am still getting the emails (and didn’t ask to be removed). @Craig_Holliday or @hsousa can you help? Would still love to test, this happened a few weeks ago and only affects Plex, not any other apps I am testing in TestFlight. Thanks!
No it doesn’t and yes stick with 9333
The experimental player builds will say as such.
EDIT
Since I posted 9408 just landed which does have the experimental player.
No notes yet but they usually follow up with a post with what’s changed.
Some quick tests on the new build on my iPhone and Apple TV this morning.
Seemed to honor my subtitle settings a little more. Subtitles now have the background from my settings, though font and size seem to change video to video. Mov_text and srt.
Audio sync seems a tad better on my Stereo OG HomePods (only setup I’ve had audio sync issues with).
Transcoding MP4’s with mov_text subs does not display the transcoded webvtt. Is there another preferable format to transcode into that I can put in the xml profile?
Transcoding with an SRT does still appear.
iPhone still seems to want to use the AVPlayer for PiP which is causing issues with the new HEVC transcoder with live tv especially.
Another improvement on the build, must be getting close to stable enough to trump the current player. Great work @Craig_Holliday and team.
