Apple Player Update Beta Testing - Archive

We’re aware of when the build is going to expire!

We have a replacement build almost ready that we still plan on getting out to you before the current one expires.

For added context, we’ve identified a few issues on this build and are working to get major blockers fixed so it can be properly tested by everyone here. A warning though, this will not be a release-ready build, but one where we’re explicitly asking people to provide feedback. If you only have access to this build (i.e. you’re not on the TF public beta list) feel free to ping me and I’ll make sure you have access to the beta builds as a fallback whenever necessary.

On behalf of the team, I wanna say we appreciate your patience and help getting this stuff worked through!

@hsousa I’d like to have access to the other betas.

Is there a technical reason for not releasing the same build we have now as a new number to ensure continuity while those bugs are resolved? I have finally had a decent plex experience for 90 days, there’s no issue with the current beta other than the expiry date

@hsousa Thank you very much, I would also like to have access to the beta to try it and comment on my experience please

Yeah that would actually be cool.
That said…

Perhaps you’re thinking that the current beta is purely for the stuttering issue? There’s plenty more stuff broken that they’re working on. I suspect they’re working on fixing as much as possible.

But as said I do agree that for the stutter issue alone, the soon to expire beta is a great start. Hopefully as they make progress and it gets to the stage where Plex are tweaking/optimizing (and not fixing what’s completely broken) the builds will become more frequent and we have the option to roll back a build if a particular build regresses.

The stuttering is the difference between me using infuse or plex, nothing else has been noticeable to me. I have a very simple setup and plex client is what my wife prefers, so in 1 day I’m probably in trouble if we’re choosing between unstable plex or switching to infuse again!

Yep I understand that.
For anyone with just an Apple TV and not HomePods and AirPods, then the latest beta is an upgrade.
For anyone with HomePods especially, I can assure you that the random stuttering was always far less of an issue than audio cutting out on ALL playback after a few minutes.

Those cutouts aren’t actually happening in this beta but that’s due to the fact that the “new audio engine” was simply removed rather than anything being fixed in itself.

There is absolutely zero chance of me switching back from Infuse purely on the basis that Plex (hopefully) fixed the stuttering. They have a long way to go yet.

I’d also like access to the other TestFlight beta. Thanks.

So the latest beta has metal support and fixes the stuttering like the build I’ve been using?

Wait sorry I think I misunderstood you because I happened to get added to the beta channel at the same time as your post lol

We’re on the same beta aren’t we?
The ones that expires in the next 48 hours?

EDIT. Yeah sorry it may have been me who misled you.

Oh right.
I was dumped for the original TestFlight for some reason a while ago, but was invited to the Molten TestFlight.
Since your post I now see
8.34
8.35
8.36
Am I right in thinking that 8.34(8096) is still currently the only build with Molten support?

Yes, there has been no build changes regarding this so far.

We’ll post the build information here once that’s available, and the build itself will also mention it in the “what to test” section.

Cool thanks.

It’s possible that I had been on a previous Test Flight build and hadn’t updated to the latest version but the one just pushed out to me, that is 8.36 (8457), has resolved all of my issues.

I tested high bitrate 4k remuxes with multiple audio formats using two HomePods as speakers and it played them without fault. In previous builds, the audio would stutter or carry on playing for a few seconds after I hit pause/stop. Now, it stops and resumes instantly. Is this somehow connected to the new audio engine?

For my use case, I no longer have a need for Infuse. Thanks for restoring my faith in Plex!

So to be clear your main issue was the stuttering issue or the Audio dropouts with HomePods…or both?
If you had the stutter issues then there would seemingly be no reason for the build you’re running to fix them.

And if it was just the audio dropouts can you confirm if
8.36 (8457) has the option for the new audio engine? Because for me that was cured only when the new audio player was removed from the builds and that happened a long time ago.

Edit. So you’re saying the new audio engine is in your build?

So given its bedtime in Australia and there’s 8 hours left… Tomorrow for me the only way to use plex with the molten stutter fix will be to have an unstable build that changes other things I don’t need? Or are you going to somehow renew the “just molten” fix until the other stuff is release ready?

I had a similar experience with 8.36 (8457) and a combination of the tvOS 17.5.1 update resolved all my stuttering issues with my AppleTV 4K and HD units, but I’m looking forward to being able to test the new mpv version when available.

New audio engine is in 8.36 (8457) with the option to disable it in settings on tvOS. It is still unavailable on iOS.

Yeah but eventually it was removed from tvOS also, but that was possibly just in the Molten build. (I’m not sure)

Edit: Just re-read your post.
So did it ever disappear on the builds you have ran or has the new Audio engine always stayed present.

It has disappeared when you and I originally reported the TrueHD Multichannel audio issues, but it’s been back for a while (I don’t remember the specific tvOS build it returned).

Damn. Yeah as I said in another post I got kicked from the regular TestFlight builds and only had the Molten build option.
I now have them all back so as the HomePod issue was always the bigger issue I’m gonna be testing it out this evening. Thanks for the update.
