Apple Player Update Beta Testing - Archive

As a heads up, I’ve noticed a big improvement on playback and stutter issues since updating to tvOS 17.5.1, including on my older AppleTV HD devices using both old and new players.

Prior to 17.5.1, plex and infuse were both unusable on tvOS, but now I see similar performance to tvOS 16.

Also, UHD performance on AppleTV 4K with DV and HDR files has seen a performance increase.

My ATV was just fine before 17.5.1 with Infuse. Plex sucked before and still sucks.

Sounds like you had something else going on - maybe a network issue or something like that. Infuse has been fine on my ATVs for years, and I have a mixture of ATV versions. On the flip side, Plex has been awful. And still is after 17.5.1

I would rather the next test flight release include dozens of fixes on the myriad of issues than something rushed out to appease. I encourage us to be patient, something is going on. We await the next release @Craig_Holliday and thanks for the update.

No other changes (10Gbps network backbone, NAS server, same test media files). Only our Dev AppleTV HD devices that were updated to tvOS 17 were affected by the playback bug that caused constant stutter and audio slip across apps, typically on media with HEVC playback. It affected both Infuse and Plex on the older devices, though sometimes using the “old player” in Plex would help and on Infuse it was less noticeable. Units that I kept on tvOS 16 did not suffer from the issue and were tested at the same locations as the tvOS 17 units. Once the AppleTV HD devices were updated to tvOS 17.5.1 the playback bug was resolved across all apps.

In regards to AppleTV 4K devices, Infuse has never had a problem, but Plex did have some stutter issues with remux UHD media with TrueHD and DV when running tvOS 17. The devices that I kept on tvOS 16 did not have the same issue. Since updating to tvOS 17.5.1 on those devices Plex playback is smooth and there are no audio slip or stutter issues on the same test media.

Granted, all my test media is remux files that I make myself, and I have seen issues with 3rd party acquired media that was improperly encoded or wrapped and AppleTV’s, but typically they’ve been the most reliable Plex clients that I’ve tested, with the only downside of not being able to output TrueHD Atmos to my AVR and the limited DV profiles.

While I can appreciate the optimism, this was a TestFlight started 2.5 months ago with the sole purpose of finally attacking performance on high bitrate/HDR material that has plagued Plex. There was then one (?) release with the new engine active, which has severe color banding on some media making it basically unusable for myself and others. So I’m not overly excited that it’s already lost its focus to a “backlog of other features” after one release – other bugs perhaps, but not features. Either way, in 17 days the current TestFlight release will hit its 90 day expiration. So I guess we’ll either see if something was really “going on”, or if there are a just bunch of posts about the expiration.

8 days left, what’s the plan here?

Please at least issue a “new” build to reset the timer

My personal solution: bought Ugoos AM6B+, sold Apple TV. Together with PlexMod for Kodi this results in the best Plex experience I had in years. Highly recommended.

I was removed from the beta yesterday (not sure why), anyone else?

That’s not a “solution” and no one cares that you did that (especially in this thread).

You’re absolutely right, and you can sit and keep waiting, like I’ve been waiting for four years. But since a few months ago there is an objectively better solution for a Plex box, so now you finally have a choice.

I’m not here to argue and will not reply further, just wanted to highlight this for those, who are sick of waiting as well.

Definitely not a solution for me. I’d lose a whole boat load of functionality if I did that. I use Apple Home so I can see who’s at the door etc… Apple TV+, Apple Music etc etc

Yeah, as I said easy at the moment since there was only one build. Not if they start coming thick and fast on both beta tracks.

So it’ll be this week right? Mine is expiring in 4 days. 8.34 (8096) is the only one I have access to
